So in about July of 2016 I started my venture of getting my old 93 idi running again. We took the heads off to go to the machine shop where we learned that the valve guides were trashed and it was going to be a $1000+ fix. We have had this motor sitting open cylinder with little to no protection for about a year and a half and I was wondering if it was usable as a rebuild project. How much of a rebuild project are you talking? Can't tell how the internals look or if the oil pan is full of water but if you send that block off to be cleaned, decked and bored/honed I'd bet it'd be fine.

If you're talking about just cleaning it up and bolting it back together... I'll leave that for someone with more experience.

It can be done but it will take some extra work to get it right. IDI's are not very forgiving if put together wrong.

With a decking and boring job, The block and rotating assembly will probably be fine.

As for the heads, that's where some complications could arise depending on how much you trim from the block surface. These engines have very close running tolerance and any surfacing done to the head or block can throw this off, potentially resulting in piston to valve collision.

The way around this is to either trim the valve stems to reduce valve lift, or go with decompressed pistons.

Trimming the valve lift will eat up some power. How much is hard to say. If all you take off is 10-15 thou, it may not be noticeable.

Decompressed pistons are available for non-turbo IDI's. Not sure about the turbo pistons though (larger wrist pins).

There may also be a third option available. Shim the head with a gasket spacer. This is relatively new for the IDI, and I don't know if anyone here has tried it yet.

And lastly, the intake manifold may also not seal up very well if too much surface is taken off the block and heads.


Next time, spray some WD-40, FluidFilm, or any kind of penetrating/preservative oil before wrapping it in plastic. Small effort will save you more trouble down the line.

Thanks for the info guys.:Thumbs Up As far as a rebuild goes I was thinking a complete rebuild (machining, new pistons, all new seals, ect.) I ended up just buying a used motor in really good condition for about $850 earlier this year. I was just thinking about getting it into running condition and buying R and D performance parts for a drop in motor for something else.

Sad truth is the engine with water damage needs a complete bore and rebuild. But you have another good engine so its all good.

It also depends on what your bore size is right now. If it's standard, then you'll be fine boring it. If it's at +.030, then you'll have to sleeve the block.
