is it nessecary to lower the gearbox?

I built an adapter to go on my floor jack. Cut a flat plate a little bigger than the pan and welded some blocks that are tall enough to ride on the bolt heads. Put these on both sides and one in the back. Made loops for a strap and used a short pipe that fit the hole where the saddle on the jack is. Worked ok but I pulled the tranny and transfer case at the same time, worked a lot better going in after I separated the two.

Don't have pics of it, it's at my brother in law's shop where my truck has lived for the last 7 months, but can get some tomorrow morning after work if your interested.
Definitely pull both separate it's a lot easier...

definitely have a catch pan when you pull the driveshaft, it's a slip fit with a seal holding the fluid in.

Just what I was going to suggest. I've used one that someone else made and it did work ok. Certainly better than just a floor jack.

Ok guys, appriciating the answers!, doiing this to my Ford, is totally new to me, Even since I have my truck already for 13 years! due to document problems I couldn't drive her for all that time, so she only stood around, and now I can drive her (legally), and I have to start with such a "problem"... Just change the seal, and back on the road!

Well, Just got the tranny back from the shop where it lived for the last 1,5 year!
I've separated the two, and making arrangements to reinstall all, wish me luck?
I'm out working in the street.

Why did an overhaul take so long? I had my in laws E4od built and it took 4 days.

He told me that to order from the states sometimes took 4 months, and if then a piece is not to specks, another 4.... go figure out.

I have had good luck with the ratchet straps but I have used many many of they not two, more like 4-6 and just keep in mind that until it’s held up by bolts it could fall at any time even with a proper jack things go wrong. The only thing you need to keep in mind to stay safe is NEVER EVER EVER put a body part under something that can fall. No arms no legs no reaching under it just to grab the tool you dropped I have had all kinds of things fall down and just steer clear and you will be A OK.

Never ever get under a Hydraulic System w/o it being safely supported.
Dump truck has a leg to swing down to support the bed.
never get under a loader bucket with it raised up. There is a piece of channel iron to place along side a Ram to support it.
I ran equipment for many years, I have had Hydraulic Hoses Blow, Hyd Rams blow apart.

Had the main 3/4" main Hyd Hose blow on a JD Grader 672A Blow as I was hi balling back to the yard down a windy Mt. Road.
Blade started to come down touch the road, lifted it, started coming down again then the toe. Then the steering got sluggish and had enough to run it down a high dirt berm and burry the blade.
Of course the road behind me was coated in oil.

So that Hyd ram on our Engine Hoists needs to be respected. Never get under it, yet how many times do we not give it a second thought as we are focused on getting things lined up?

One thing I always remember that my dad told me whe we had a vehicle in the air….

Never put anything under the vehicle you are not willing to loose….

So when working on anything I keep that in mind. Like if I have a wheel off, I place my feet so if it falls my feet are out of the way of the hub inside the wheel well area so everything is clear

Anytime I have a wheel off the wheel is under the vehicle, just throw it under there for cheap insurance.

Thanks, What happened here; the guy form the county came with a machine on a arm behind a agricultural tractor to cut the roadsides, ditches and the so. one way or another he managed to cut our phone line at 4 meter high, so we had absolutely no phone internet or nothing! What a bummer, couldn't ask any of you for advice, search for images,nothing.
that was Wednesday late afternoon, and now Monday morning, was the first available service guy who passed, and repaired the cable.
wow, that was a calm couple of days! though I managed! both gearboxes are installed, and I just finished to fill them up.
all that rests is test driving and checking the levels.
I used the 3 strap and a garage jack method, and all worked wonderfully well! I installed them both apart, E4OD and Transfer Case.

what would be the correct way to check for the correct level in the E4OD?
He is overhauled (completely dry on the inside), I installed, and filled in 16,5 liter atf, where the book says 16,9.
when cold, I filled 4 liter, started and stopped the engine right away (for to get the oil in the converter and the system.) did that every 4 liter, then when I was at 14 liter started the engine, put my feet at the brake,and passed the gear in all gears for about 1 second, and then retour to P, leaving the engine running and check the level.

Now, if you have enough fluid, you take it for a drive to warm up the transmission. Then you check the level.
By the way, I was always told that you should put at least one quart of fluid in a new convertor before you install it. I guess it's to make sure that it doesn't start turning with the engine with nothing in it. That could cause damage, but it's too late for you to worry about that now. It could just be a fairy tale. I don't know.

I’m not sure if it’s a fairytale or not I say it’s one of those things that’s just one of those things we may never know but it doesn’t hurt.
