IP gremlin

Here's my story for the IP gurus.

So I was a plowing snow yesterday and stopped in to my neighbors after I finished their driveway and talked with them for 5-10 minutes leaving Mater running.

I hoped back in and headed for the next driveway when I noticed that the motor sounded like the IP cycled into cold advance mode. Rattling pretty good but was missing and acting very low on power.

Well something caught my attention out of the corner of my eye and looking out the passenger mirror was the best “ pouring the coal” show I had ever seen. It was blowing so much black smoke out the exhaust that it looked more like a truck that had a pulling sled behind it at the county fair grounds.

I didn’t even want to think what my exhaust temps were at that point and was more concerned making it to my next stop without the truck dying on our fine unplowed 14 inch snow covered roads.

I made it there and dropped the plow to get a path cleared but Mater said nope, not got enough power to do that. So I popped the hood and pulled the cold advance solenoid wire. Didn’t change the engine rattle, so I just pulled the power feed to the IP and shut it down.

Plugged it back in and hit the key and everything was all back to normal.

Couldn’t get it to reproduce the symptom again after that. Had plenty of power and the smoke output was back to normal.

Got an IP headed south?

Black smoke doesn't automatically mean high EGTs. It could also be caused by timing being off or air getting into the fuel, assuming lower power settings, that is.....

How cold was outside it when this happened?

If you stop the engine for a few minutes when fuel gelling is occurring (and the engine is hot), it sometimes enough for the under hood temperature to heat up the fuel in the filter enough to eliminate the fuel clouding/gelling.

Ya know Russ, for a split second I thought that I had sucked in a bunch of snow but I've got a grill blanket on there so that idea got tossed out. Plus I really hadn't "gotten" into the snow.

With the K/N filter any snow was prolly made into water injection material anyway.

Air temps were 21 degrees Farenheit yesterday and I've got a healthy dose of Power Service in there to combat gelling and between driveways was only a 5 minute drive.

My bet is that you got some snow up on the IP and it melted and turned to ice and jammed the mechanical advance on the drivers side of the pump. You didn't happen to check it to see if it was operational at the time you were looking under there, did you?

ARGH! never checked the mechanical advance. There wasn't any snow on the motor but now that you montion that, It's prolly due for a cleaning and relubing.
