I have a 86 F-250 6.9L and i think the IP is about to die. It idles high and once it gets warmed it if you just tap the gas and let go it stays revved up for 4-5 seconds. I was driving it like this and then it started dieing on me while i was driving. It was just like the motor would slowly die out till it completely shut off. What i was wondering is if i should take it to a mechanic to have the pump replaced or if this is something i could do myself with a little help, because I'm still pretty new to diesels. Someone on dieselbombers.com suggested posting here because he said there might be someone near me, i live in the Kings Island area of Ohio, might be able to help me swap the pumps and time it.

Welcome to the forum. Your engine problems could be other than the injection pump failing on you. You need to answer some questions. Are any of the injecters wet looking on the engines. Do you know how many miles are on the injection pump. Is the injection pump painted grey just like the engine is. Are the injectors painted the same color grey. How long has the fuel filter been on the system. I don't know of any member that lives close to you but hang around... Someone will be posting with some information.

Welcome.....

We do have a few members in the Cincinnati area... and Eastern Indiana. Hopefully they will chime in here shortly....

I do not get to the Cinci area as much anymore.... but have spent several weekends in the area.... and always made it up to your side of town (Mason) to see the famous Christmas Lights...... I was disappointing they stopped that....

Throttle taking 5 seconds might be the throttle cable. Try unhooking ti and doing the throttle under the hood.

The stalling could be a busted pickup tube in the tank, does it stall on both tanks? Does it stall at the same place on the fuel gauge? If not might be fuel leak

IM right up the road from ya in batavia. Have you changed your fuel filter? I just changed my pump the other week. Its just timed by ear right now, I dont have a timing meter. I have a pump but its a little worn out, but it works. Id be willing to help ya out sometime. All you need is basically regular tools, nothing real special.

First/cheapest thing to check is the throttle return spring. It's on the passenger side of the IP, attaching the throttle lever to the high-idle solenoid bracket. The spring could be stretched/fatigued, or stuck on something in a stretched position, which would put the duty of throttle return solely on the throttle cable spring.

I say this because I had it happen to my crew cab. The spring got snagged in the stretched position off and on when I would be 3/4 throttle or more, then I'd suddenly have the Toyota syndrome with my pedal stuck down. If the spring looks fine and doesn't snag when you pull the throttle lever all the way back, un hook the spring and pop off the throttle cable and feel how freely the throttle lever moves back and forth. It won't feel completely free, but any really obvious stickiness is a sign of imminent demise. I doubt that's actually the issue, so I'd start with the spring and a visual inspection of the cable and it's routing. Sometimes the cable can get pinched by the air box.

Regarding the stalling, does it do it the same on both tanks, or on a full tank? Theres alot of air possibilities, try to narrow down some of the circumstances for us/yourself and we can better help ya. Welcome to OB's!

I hope thats not your truck I seen on craigslist for sale? Its really not necessary. This is an easy fix. The injector pump is the most sophisticated part on an idi but still it isnt to bad. Im about 20-30 miles from you. You can call me text me or I can meet with ya to help coash and help you get it running correct.

I'm by no means an expert on these...but my 87 6.9 was acting like this for a week or so until the lift pump completely died in my drive way.... 32.00 and an hour later it was running again...and much stronger.

I dont think its the cable or the spring, the throttle returns all the way back where its supposed to. Also the idle solenoid on the IP wont return in on its own, it stays pushed out the entire time its running. but my truck does the same thing regardless of whether the solenoid is plugged in or not. I tried replacing it with a used one off ebay because i thought that was the problem but it didnt change anything. So i think i got a broken one lol

If you cant find a local diesel shop that knows how to time these things you can do one of two things: do like i did and line up the timing marks, drive it for a few months complaining about the lack of mpg and power-cuss and then advance the timing a touch. or you can just skip to advancing it a touch from the get go. I advanced mine two dimes widths from the static timing marks. at that setting i get a slight haze of balck smoke under moderate acceleration. my mpg and power has gone up also!

I'd be looking at a sticky metering valve for the stalling issue. Nothing a quart of ATF in the fuel tank can't take care of.
