Ice Ice Baby!!

I've been gone for most of last week and this past weekend secondary to the ice storm that hit Kentucky. No power, no water, no heat, no food = NO FUN!

No power since Tuesday morning (1/27) at my house. I've got a generator running lights, the fridge, and space heaters. My electricl furnance (heat pump) takes way too much power to run on the 8000 watt (30 amp) generator I have. My cable internet service at home is toast for an undetermined amount of time. Folks are going crazy trying to get gasoline for generators, but I got a 55 gallon drum and filled it up Friday when I got my generator and have plenty left.

There is power at the hospital and at the office and I have working high-speed internet at the office as well. Lots to posts to read.............but I just wanted to say hi and let you know where I've been.

I know exactly where you are coming from, I spent a lot of the end of last week with a chainsaw getting fallen trees out of the road so that we could go get some food. My wife works at a hospital too (nurse) so she couldn't be off, so I had to get her there, it wasn't horrible, but, retarded drivers made the traveling much worse than the ice did. We got lucky and were only without power for a little over a day, but it sucked that we didn't have cable or internet until friday late.

I am guessing by your avatar that you went to UK, me too, I am actually going back evenings, to work on a different degree.

ouch, sorry to hear about your missfortune, same thing happend to us last year we were out power for several days. it really opens your eyes to how much you depend on being supplied from the grid. we have a wood stove that i heat primarily with anyway so at least that was a non issue. first time we used it to cook with though.

91f2504x4, Where in Ky are you. The further east and south/north you go, it isn't nearly as bad. We where in the "perfect" spot for the ice. Over an inch on ice on everything! I went to WKU in Bowling Green for undergraduate education and UK for med school.

Hey Heath glad to hear your doing good our electric was out for a week when we had that wind storm from that huricane but it was warm then so I can imagine what some people are like with it being cold

Seriously, sorry to hear about the problem. Ice is such a drag. I wish we could get just a good snow storm instead of the normal crappy mix.

Yup, at $1.69/gallon x 55 gallons = $92.95 Plus $35 for a hand operated "drum pump" and $1350 for the generator = $1478. That's a heck of a power bill for one month eh?

Well, we just recently started wearing shoes and stopped putting our "seed" in our sisters and cousins............but we've had flush toilets and "lectricity" for a year or two.

Gary, they are hard to come by in Ky, and surround In and Tn. I got one for me and for Dad from a Lowes in Chatanooga, Tn. Missy's uncle bird-dogged them for us. He met Dad and I halfway in Nash-Vegas. I had two 300lb generators and two 55 gallon drums (close to 500lbs each) plus 6 five gallon fuel cans in the bed of the truck Friday. It was roughly a ton in the bed and the truck never let me know it was there.

Funny thing was I was fixin to start a thread called "ice ice baby" down in the lounge but ya beat me to it!!! I've been in and out of power since tuesday also..... not out always but always at the most inconvenient times.... Here's some pics from around my area during and right after the storm....

Ours went out Tuesday and came on last night. We couldn't find a kerosene can for 100 miles in any direction. I have one, but it looked like it was growing algae. I flushed it and used it as a backup. Wanted to get more than 5 gallons of kerosene, as they were lined up to buy it also. I have a 5500 watt gen. and boy was it handy. I'm total electric, so I couldn't run everything, but the frig, a couple of heaters and the tv to entertain the daughter and we were pretty cozy. Never lost water, but boy were showers an eye opener!
