Horn Problem

So, I've just installed new horns thanks to @Waystro.

However, I'm having some issues.

I have the horns in and plugged in, and whenver I go to plug the fuse in, the horns immediatly go off. I didn't press the button or anything.

I did a few tests. I unplugged the negatives on both batteries, then installed the fuse. The second I put the negative on either battery, the horns went off.

Basically, the horns are not being controlled by the button on the steering wheel. However, somehow I got them to stay quiet, then I tapped the horn button and they just kept going off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think I may have a bad ground, but I really don't know how to check.

If ya have cruise control, might be a bad relay, it's under the dash I think. No cruise, then could be the horn button on the steering wheel. The horn mounting is the ground side, unless the horns have two wire connections.

I do have cruise control, which doesn't work.

Is there a way to test for a bad relay before I put a new one in? I have a multimeter.

And the horns are the one wire ones that use the body as ground.

Guess I'll pop off the wheel and investigate.

I mean could be the relay sticking also.

Will do. I may as well install a new relay.

Just switch a relay to try it out. Could be a relay under the hood for towing, might be two just hanging there, with cruise there's just a button, without there is a ring with a brush riding on it.

Now dont quote me on this but I recall an issue with the bullnose trucks and horns. It is in the horn switch...padding would get fubarred and then it would make constant contact.

IIRC I had to peel rubber carefully off find the deteriorated foam remove it replace and worked golden....but this was quite a while ago n stroke a few years ago kiboshed memory n such so not sure.

Hmm all good places to start. I've had horn relays go out(not in a ford but still applies here)
But also could be like jasper said the tone ring is also a good place to look also.

Could you elaborate on the "tone ring"?

What exactly is that and what do I look for.

Again I camt remeber exacly...but the cross bar for horn/cruse controls is a soft frubbery plastic cover and jt is UNDER that cover the problem I remember on e dealing with stuck horn...but crap it is juzt ****** me off I cannot recall. Damn stroke took lots of stuff. Not an excuse just a fact man


Should be 2 phillips screws from other side of wheel hold the x bar pad in place remove it disconnect wires...then fer ***** n giggles connect horn...if quiet...its horn switch in that xbar....

BTW in order to remove steering wheel this must come off...so try this FIRST...
