The machine shop called back today, and the cylinder walls had anywhere from 6 to 10 thousanths of wear, So I gave him the green light to bore it out twenty thousanths.
Maybe. Depends on if he has a model A or B engine. By 85' it should be a B, but model A engines had the injector nozzles pressed in. Takes a special tool to get them out and put them in.
And that special piston oil cooler tool is no longer made plus.... Those pressin oil jets are rare and expensive.... Hope yours are the boltin type. They are easy to remove and install. They reqiure some blue loctite on the specially hardened bolt threads.
Nope.. That would be some major machine work for sure. Really not worth it for an early block thats proned to cracking around the block heater port. At least thats my take on it....
I think the A blocks are just fine as long as you eliminate that block heater but that's just my opinion. I would use one in a heartbeat if it wasn't cracked or repaired. Surely a tool to remove them correctly could be fabricated.
No doubt the tools exist, as obviously nobody is using them anymore for the most part. Just a matter of finding one somebody would want to give away. Fabricating replacement jets from scratch probably wouldn't be that hard, would it Gary?
I am almost positive this an A type block with the pressed in type oilers. Does anybody have a picture the tool? I should be able to make it if i can see what it looks like. Besides the oilers, what else makes the two blocks different from each other? After all this work I am not turning back now just because there is a chance it might crack.
Boy o boy did it take a long time for someone to show or say the bolt in squirters have just one bolt holding them in..... Anyway. Making up a set of pressin squirters would be tuff. Getting the metalurigacial prosess done is thw hard part. Then the ends need to be crimped down so they are the correct opening. The bore diameter is 52 thousands so welding them up and drilling them out and finally using a multi fluted reamer that size and its done that far. The actual fabrication and press fit is another issue. Making one would be ok but having to make 8 would be trouble. There are actually 2 tools. One is for the removel & installation and the other tool is for the alignment of the installed nozzle. I don't have a picture of either but I think I have the Rotunda part number for the tools.
Wow this seems like a big mess now. I think making the squirters would be harder than getting the tool. I have two blocks on the ground each with eight press-in squirters, so i am willing to take a chance at pulling them out and ending up with at least eight good ones. That part number would be very helpful, Thanks for all the input.
Yep, there are 2 tools, one for removal and installation, and one for the "target zone" callibration to make sure the oil jet is aimed right. I made my own tool for the target zone by averaging the aim of all of the oil squirters. As it turns out, one of them was bent (probably by me during the teardown.).
