Well they called me back to let know what they ran the pump I was having problems with and claimed that the head was blocked up by some dirt or something that was in it. They are still sticking by nothing else wrong with it and it tests fine. What I don't get is if the pump head is plugged up why does it start cold everytime and run great and then not start hot? I would think if its plugged up it wouldn't run right at all. Figured I would throw this up for conversation cause I am trying to learn something here.

There is a small possibility that whatever would settle out and allow it to fire cold and then get sucked back up against something to where it wouldn't fire again after it had been run, then after sitting a while the crud would settle back away again. Theoretically, but that's not what usually causes a hot no start.

That is a slight variation of the story they told me when I returned a pump to them with a bad head. They claimed I had run watery veggie oil through it and it was full of trash. (We had had conversations about VO in the past.) I had talked with them about WVO on several occasions before that, but I had bought the ip from them and put it on a truck that I had just bought and had never run anything other than #2 diesel through.
I think they were looking for an excuse for me and you.

I have no reason to doubt them and Ed has always been strait with me it just seems odd. They also told me that if they ever see anything other than a Racor filter on my truck they will not cover anything on my fuel system at all. They have been good to me and let me borrow tools when ever I have needed them. Ed even told me if I wanted to try and run this motor I just got I could borrow their portable radiator setup.

Ed told me the exact same thing. I had a wix on my truck and he put a racor on. I like Ed, but there had been nothing but fresh #2 through the ip I returned to him.
Six months earlier, I had given him an ip as a core that had come off another truck. The head in it was shot and because of that I had run WVO, WMO, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid and anything else I could get my hands on through it. That truck wouldn't start at all on #2. It needed the more viscous fluids.
I kinda think they cleaned that pump and sold it back to me without replacing the head. :dunno My understanding from here is that a new head in a DB-2 costs more than southeast is charging for their rebuilds.
I still use them for some parts, but my next pump is coming from Mel.

I would have got a baby moose but I just didn't have the cash at the time. Not that I have this spare motor to build I may do a little performance stuff to it.

What you are describing is classic for heat soak on a bad IP. Mel explains it better than I can so here is his explaination from a previous post:

All that has been said is true. The science is this... the part of the IP that rotates and distributes fuel to the injection lines, does so by aligning a single port with one of the eight radiating lines. This alignment is gasketless, and relies on a tolerance that is extremely fine. When the plungers come together to squirt the fuel, the fuel must pass from the rotating part, into the stationary part, with the fuel passing through free space between the two parts. This space is so small that a fuel molecule is bigger than that space (Ok, that's an oversimplification but you get the idea), and has no where to go but into the opposing port and down the injection line. All of this, being done at over 1000 PSI. If the stationary part were to "grow" or say, get larger in diameter, then the fuel molecule has an alternate path to take, and it doesn't get to the injector. Heat soak, actually causes this. The stationary external head gets bigger, faster, then the internal rotating head, and the resultant space between the two parts causes the injection event to fail. Pouring the water on, shrinks it down and fixes the problem. But, you can see that if it shrinks too much, you have a serious problem. Once you get it started again, the circulating fuel evens out the temps in the pump, and all the parts grow or shrink at the same rate, preserving the tolerances. A worn pump's tolerances are too great, thus the heat soak becomes a problem, where as even on a good pump you have heat soak, but the space between the parts was smaller to begin with, so even after expansion the injection event suceeds. I can see how inserting really hot fuel into a pump could cause the same problem but from the inside out, expanding the rotating head faster than the stationary head could expand. Alternative fuel viscosity can be a more significant problem however, since if the plungers can't squeeze the fuel through the orifaces sized for diesel fuel, then your going to get a hydrolock situation which will also snap the shaft, and destroy the advance cam ring.

Sorry man, but I don't know that the IP is in very good shape. Ed sounds like a nice guy, but business is business. Ken at DPS is a nice guy too, but his business practices and quality are why he's not selling much IDI stuff anymore.

And I still think that it is heat soak and will always think that it was heat soak no matter what Southeast says. I wish I had a way of tracking that pump to see if the next guy has problems with it too.

do you have any idea what the numbers on that pump were? I have them all written down. If you still have your receipt the numbers of the pump you turned in should be on it.

Here is my receipt with pump serial numbers. Unfortunately I don't have my receipt where I originally gave them a pump with a bad head. That receipt went when I sold that truck.

Just compared that to the serial numbers that I had on mine and none match. Ed says he has 2 trucks done there that need pumps so I hope he puts that one on one of them. I would love to be a fly on the wall if it comes back again.

the wholesale price on a DB2 head and rotor is about 400 bucks, that is why the rebuild can go from 450 to 1000 in a heartbeat.

The one I just had done on the excavator was bad but now starts hot or cold, I have the old parts and there is such minor wear on them it looks "ok" but it wouldnt start hot.
Very exact tolerances in there, just as Mel has said.

And being that they sell there rebuilds for $391.xx I bet they don't change very many heads.
