Does anyone know the maximum input torque for the gearvendors/laycock unit? I'm thinking of finding a used laycock unit and fitting it behind my transmission, but don't want to blow it up!

No idea what the laycock unit is, GV claims anything under 400hp and gross vehicle weight of 30,000 pounds you can shift with the hammer down and it'll take it just fine. 600 hp and 12,000 same claim

Thanks on the numbers.

Gearvendors buys Laycock ODs (type P I believe) and adds an adaptor for different transmissions, google "laycock de normanville"

Even as I post this, I know I'm going to regret it...but I'll ask anways.

Is the U.S. Gear unit for a 2 wheel drive or a 4x4? Is it set up for an auto or a manual tranny? How much are you asking for it? Any chance you'd accept a trade for a T-19? :D

If I could fit that US Gear unit under my Bronco, I'd buy it from you in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I don't think there would be enough drive shaft left to do it. Both of my other trucks have GV units, and double overdrive with 4.10's is equivelent to a T-19 or C6 with a 3.54 rear. I wouldn't want to own a full size pickup without one, regardless of what engine or configuration. More gears is always better! ;Sweet

How much do you want for the US Gear unit?

I did some calculation once for overdrive/underdrive comparison and bigger tires. It was pretty interesting.

I was thinking about going to 245/19.5 wheels. I should improve safety and load capacity while towing, and have extra room inside the wheels to do a rear disc brake conversion. Am I off base on these ideas?

I was thinking of adding a US Gear overdrive before I started thinking about the 245/19.5. But, maybe the underdrive will work better.

Stock 4.10 gears
225/19.5 = 3.92
245/19.5 = 3.60.

Final drive ratios:
US Gear OverDrive .80 over
215/16 = 2.32
225/19.5 = 2.22
245/19.5 = 2.05
US Gear UnderDrive 1.25 under
215/16 = 2.91
225/19.5 = 2.78
245/19.5 = 2.52
These #s are taken from US Gear chart for 4.10 and 3.55 ratios.

With 8 speeds of underdrive and 245/19.5 things would be comparable to 8 speeds of overdrive with 215/16 except I'll get a granny gear of 12.02 vs 11.11 stock.

A .78 ratio brings the final drive to make a 4.1 rear end rev like a 3.2 rear end in overdrive, even better than a 3.54 :)

I can't believe those Laycock units are that stout. The same units were factory on Volvo car manual trannys a few years back ( and I've bought parts for them from Gear Vendors )
Do those things still have a leather band in the cone clutch?

Robert-

Laycock had several different levels, kinda like a c4 and a c6. I havn't found a list of all types, but I believe that there are several. Up untill the late 80's the Volvo M46 used the type J, then they went to the stout type P, also used in trucks. There are several more.

If you go to the Gear Vendors site and check out their video, it will make a believer out of you.

I gues the bodies are different, but some of the control parts are the same.

I have broken a GV. vehicle is a '85 chev 1ton service truck with a 6.5td and thm400. type "P" laycock OD. The failure occured right at the jog on the imput shaft for the oil pump rod. Yup the input shaft is not a straight piece:eek:
GV didn't care that I disected the unit. I fugred I was going to have it for dinner, so I had some fun. $350 for the rebuilt exch. They tell me it does happen rarely on heavy service trucks.

Sounds nice...unfortunately, based on what you've said, it sounds like it's in better condition than I can afford. I'm not in a financial position to offer more than about $500 for it, so I think I'll have to bow out to the others...I'm sure they can offer closer to what it's worth...

I had to try, right? ;)
