I have a 2004 Ram 3500 dually with the 5.9 six speed manual trans and 213000 miles. I use it to tow new 5th wheel RV trailers from the manufacturers to dealers around the country. I regularly get 11.5 mpg with the trailer and no wind (about 12.5K trailer weight) at 67mph and 24+ empty at 2100 rpm or about 71mph. You're going to get less until it's broken in. Bob

Umm.. 24+? Is that on the overhead or pen and paper figures?

The overhead computers are rarely accurate. Hell the one in my '00 3500 4x4 showed me getting mid 20s as well. Best i ever got was 20 once, but most of the time 18-19.

Those trip computers are crap. In my 98 Chrysler Minivan, if i take my foot off the pedal and coast, it says i'm getting 99 mpg. The computer will figure that into the average MPG reading, and that really skews it. Pen and paper is the ONLY way to tell for sure.

I get around 22 in town and 26@65-75 on the highway. I couldn't make myself buy a Crap.7L THe 5.9L's ROCK its all about synthetic lubricants that make that difference

Pueblo and Leadville Colorado.
Average 16mpg with the Powerstrokes, and 12mpg with the 460. My Cummins gets great fuel mileage, as it is still in pieces in the garage, waiting for me to get motivated to finish the conversion!

I'm not going to type much... But my signature and my web pages are my proof...

Thank you. That is some very cool stuff! You have some interesting info and I apprectiate the time and effort and agree with the basic results/differences.

However, it would seem that any electronic calculations would suffer from the same innacuracies as the OEM overhead computer. Although I read about how the OEM computer does its calculations, I don't remember what it was. But I think it's the accuracy of GPH calculations by the computer that I question. In other words, while the numbers will vary according to the type of driving done (percentage-wise), have the actual mileage numbers been confirmed manually using the fill-to-the-brim and hand calulation method?

Not here...
Ahhhh... This is where I got you... ;Really

The ScanGauge II can be calibrate more accurate than the overhead idiot. Like stock truck speedometer/odometer like my own is off a small percentage... Like I'm off 0.5 MPH so in my full tank run checking with my ScanGauge II and my GPS (Garmin GPS V) I found that the odometer is off up to 15-20 miles which alters the math by 0.1 to 0.2 MPG's...

You thought I didn't keep a written fuel log...LOL I've kept a fuel log on my truck since 22K miles to current. I've logged every ounce of fuel...

Now lets do some math on this entry...

123,907 - 123,558 = 349 Miles

349 miles / 14.893 = 23.43 MPG

$67.00 / 14.894 = $4.498 (Per gallon calculated)

I really do wish I had my camera that day... But it was quite the cheap fill for such distance! But my ScanGauge II was about 0.2 MPG off from my math that fill... This is because of the odometer reading...

For my full write fuel logs and graphs there on my web site as well... I got nothing to hide...

At current fuel prices rising in New Meadows, ID... I can't afford to keep filling my truck to make a point with MPG but when I got a accurate tool that CAN be calibrate to any vehicles I'll continue to use it.

This is the only way to calibrate the ScanGauge II is to fill to the brim twice and get the offset of gallons... To calibrate the ScanGauge II is fill up and enter amount of fuel you pumped in you tank to fill. It calculates the offset percentage from that... During my fill up though my ScanGauge tells me exactly how much full I can pump in and how much it will cost! Something the "Overhead Idiot" can't do..

Also the enter up above I re-calibrated the ScanGauge II at that point since both fills are back to back... So I know I calibrated for now...

With all that data, I figured you kept records of your mileage. I was just wondering how accurate your bottom-line mileage numbers were. From your explaination, they would appear to be pretty accurate. Thanks!;Sweet

04.5 With 110K Miles, 48RE. Always with an extra 300lbs of tools, junk, etc. in the bed and my 300lbs driving. I've logged every tank since I bought it 1 1/2 years ago.
My old trip to work was 13 miles. 3 miles stop and go redlights and 10 miles 75 mph interstate. My avg was 16.5 - 17mpg.
I'm now working 3 (yes, 3!) miles from home and it's all stop and go, not over 45 mph and my first tank averaged 12mpg!
Best that I have seen was 19.5 when half the miles on the tank were 65mph on the hiway.
BUT! If I quote the overhead I get 21.5-22mpg! :rotflmao
