well my 2 cents
i used to commonly tow a m101a1 trailer weighing 1200 with a load of 3k and 4k in the bed and the truck weighed in at 7k back then so thats 15k total. i towed a lot of mountain areas (hauling firewood) and if i was over 25 at the bottom of the hill there was no issues maybe a 5mph drop but thats with a built c6. you have a zf5 in youre sig and if youre rpms are that high and and mph that low youre clutch may be slipping or youre hiting in too high a gear try 4th or 3rd a manual should stay locked in 1-1 with the clutch out. while an auto will slip a bit so if youre doing 55 mph at 2500 rpms at the bottom you should stay around that maybe 10 mph slower by the top of a bigger hill but not that much

The ZF5 should be fine, but, I'd keep a medium duty trans behind and divorce the t-case if it were me. In the long run, it will likely be cheaper than buying the trans adaptor. They are out there like Brad said, but that ain't cheap.

I'm going to use an Eaton Fuller 6 speed behind the DT466. More beef for what I plan on doing with the DT, but for a hauling rig, it'd be extra insurance against drivetrain failure.

If it is an older 6 speed you might be able to swap the input gear and the next one behind the pto gear for OD. Is it a twin countershaft?

Single countershaft. It's a FS-6306. Looking at the parts list, I'm almost certain I can swap the parts from a FSO-6406 or FSO-8406 to make 6th overdrive.

Nope. That's Dad's next project. That '66 was bought by my mom new in '66. She's the one and only owner of the car. Dad will likely keep it as close to stock as possible during the restoration. He's even going to keep the 289 in it.

I thought of adding a turbo but with my 4spd and 4.56s she is pretty loud at 60 turning close to 3,000rpms and she does just fine without the turbo. She will outpull my wifes 94 turbo with 4.10s and a zf5 on the same hill. I will have to find the video to post that shows me rolling smoke in her face

As far as dependable transmissions for bigger Hp you can always try a Spicer 3053A with a .85 5th gear ratio and you can buy the overdrive kit that allows for .68 final drive. I have the t-19 with a np205 behind mine and it seems to hold up great. Better than any 208 or 1356 ive owned.

I am thinking however that the leaf springs on my big truck would be better suited to handle the loads I tow.

That A pump on there can be easily modified to bump up the power for reliable hauling. But, if you want to really go crazy, you can put a hot P-pump on there, injectors, twins, and ........... well the possibilities are endless.
