Is this and oem filter housing? I installed a napa filter today and it was one piece. I saved this aluminum lower half.

And what is all that big gunk in the bottom?

Yes, thats a factory housing. Can't really see the gunk in the bottom you speak of. Hopefully its not alge building up....

Nope, not kitty litter, but close. Small bits of sand and other solid contaminants that fell out of the fuel flow and settled in the bottom of the bowl. Remember the fuel you're putting in your truck is coming out of an underground storage tank that's been around a few years. There'll always be stuff in it - it's never gonna be pure. Good primary filters not only filter the fuel, they also give crud a chance to settle out, which helps your secondary filter do an even finer job of getting stuff out and helps it last longer.

Every fuel station pump out here on the west coast has a filter inline before the fuel reaches your tank... Is there actually a filter cartridge in the can....

Uh-huh. Here in east TX, we don't mess with any sissy filters. Real men run their fuel straight outta the pump. Big reason my Chevy dually had a CAT filter as a primary and the Ford's getting a 500MP. I hate surprises.
