I'm guessing the F100 is about 3500-4000lbs. I'm just not 100% on this.

so sassyrel, how long, tall, wide is the 360? any idea?

I'd say you are in the ballpark, I would guess 4000 minimum. I had a Chevy 2wd C10 short bed standard cab that I put a small block in. I weighed it in factory trim at just under 4200 pounds (full tank of fuel). I know the 360 is a monster compared to a small block Chevy, plus I had an aluminum intake on my small block, that compared to the intake on a 360 has to be a 200lb weight savings! :)

well, for 6months or so, I've been thinking to swap my drivetrain into a F100 mid-late 70's as it's my fav body style.

it'd be a serious weight loss, as I don't really work the truck anymore, it's more for transportation.....
better economy plus looking better.

we'll see what happens. It'd be tight no matter what, and the front end will be a tad heavy, but I've seen 460's in these trucks with no reinforcement... so I'd think with moderate reinforcement the 7.3 could do in there. Getting the zf5 to line up would be more an issue I'd think.

Put a built C6 behind it and gear it 2.75 or something stupid high and go eat ricers with it.

You might have to notch the engine oil pan to clear the rear steering linkage. Or cut up a big IH truck pan.

yeah, i've got time.
figured I'd buy a truck, and take a good look, figure what can fit and what can't.

shame I just gave away that c6 :) zf will fit somehow. If not I'll find another c6, would be easier/linkage wise anyway.

2-3 nice trucks on ebay right now I'm lookin at.

The oil pan to steering linkage is tight, the biggest issue is the exhaust manifold to 2wd steering box. You have to sit the engine up higher than it should be to work right, but it does fit.

The F100 and pre-79 F250 2wd frames are not super stout. They like to break around the steering box and right behind the cab when you overload them with too much power. Take it easy on it and you'll be fine though.

These older trucks were built to fit FE's and they fit very nicely. The FE is rather tall, but not as wide as a 460. The FE with an aluminum intake also weighs a few hundred less than a 429/460. The 429/460 doesn't fit that great IMO. They are a pain to work on in the trucks compared to the FE or 300 six. The IDI weighs a good bit more than a 460. Your front end will drop a lot under the weight.

When I bought my truck(s), one of the three included in the deal was a 78 F100 with a 460. While it was a chunk of motor, it looked dwarfed by the 6.9! But I will say, there was quite a bit of room around it too!

wow. break the frame eh?
well I would certainly be overdoing it with the torque.

food for thought. I'll admit my ignorance in this subject. Lot to consider, thanks guys.

the f100-150 frame aint going to be no diif than the bronco--which is what mel put the 6.9 into--so pick his brain for all the particulars-----

dont know that one off top of head--would have to go measure it--460 should be same width as 6.9

I'm a firm believer in KISS. To me, the FE is a great engine and real easy to work on in the trucks they came in. The 300 six is even easier. The 460 is crammed in there. If you actually believe there is plenty of room around a 460 in a dentside 2wd ford go change a motor mount then re-evaluate your thoughts. In my older Fords I've used the 4BT Cummins- It is an easier design to work on, lasts longer, doesn't weigh all that less than an IDI, but makes a lot more power and gets better mileage.

NO, NO, NO the pre-79 F100, F150 and F250 2wd trucks have thinner, weaker frame rails than the 4x4 trucks. All Ford 4x4's 65 and newer have had boxed forward frame rails. So yes, a 78-79 Bronco does actually have more beef in it's frame than a 67-79 F250 2wd.

The F350 2wd has a different frame design- Nearly identicle to the 67-77.5 F-250 4x4 frame.

A 4x4 will be easier. The frames are entirely different designs. A 2wd is possible and has been done many times, just doesn't lend itself to the IDI as easily.
