Whats everyone doing now days for exhaust kits on the IDI’s? Buy a power stroke kit and make it work? Or just taking it to the exhaust shop?

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Well for my '90 LB Crewcab F350 I looked round, gathered up some various stuff from behind couple muffler shops. Put bunch of 4" pipe together & finished up with a straight 4" exhaust system. No muffler.
As far as cost of muffler shop I have no idea.
As far as Power Stroke kit I have no idea about that either.

My buddy closed his shop last month before we could do my sons exhaust on his lift. (I am spoiled and don’t care much for doing big projects on the ground with Jack stands anymore.)

I am now getting quotes on a complete exhaust for my sons 67 Ford Galaxie project. (To buy a stock one from a speciality company is $950 for steel, do to the fact my son wanted shorty headers, we would have to customize those to fit.) So for us no savings over doing a custom steel exhaust. Plus get a h one x pipe in the deal. (Connection of left and right exhaust pipes.)

Shop to shop prices vary so if you go with a muffler shop get a couple quotes, you may save a few bucks. The folks with a hydraulic pipe bender tend to charge less (Faster than cutting and welding.) but add some restrictions in the exhaust at 45-90* bends. Most have a 3” but if going 4” exhaust ask them if they have the dyes for the bender.

Those who weld parts and pieces together charge more. (Takes longer to cut and weld pieces together.) But use non-restrictive mandrel bends for the 45-99* bends. So a little more HP in theory.

We are going 309 stainless with mandrel bends which is overkill and costly. But I figure it will look great for my son for some time and more importantly one and done works for me.

Let us know what you end up deciding on.

Part of the reason I finally sold off my '62 Thunderbird; Replacing the exhaust and adding headers cost 2-3x what I'd paid for the car!

Was always told to check exhaust shops for used Powerstroke exhaust when people decide to go bigger (same goes for Superduty leafs).

I used the 4" straight exhaust from my ZF5 parts truck (OBS Powerstroke) and some oddball angle pieces I saved from equipment I worked on. Still have a collection of 4" mandrel bent 90s I'm holding on to until I get around to finishing my turnout.
