Hey guys what temperature does your exhaust manifold run when the engine is at operating temperature? With a laser temp indicator mine run about 250* to 300*; my question is if this is normal? I thought that it would be much higher. At this point I am completely covering my radiator with old yard signs from the previous elections to help bring up the temp. And yes I do have a Motorcraft thermostat installed. BTW I used HOTSHOT diesel fuel additive and BOY DID IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

It is a function of EGT which is a factor of load. EGT can be around 300 at idle but can go over 1200 under load. That is the basic winter problem....light load and low ambient temp. Do you have any aux coolant filter? Is the check ball still in the air bleed port in the thermostat housing?

The engine thermostat has little to do with it unless it's stuck closed, then you have bigger problems to worry about since the engine would be overheating.

EGT on my RV runs around 700-900+ at 55-60 depending on hills. At idle, I've never looked that close, I just know it goes way down. I can't have proper cold air intake due to the ATS 085 turbo kit it has, which doesn't allow for a cover and snorkel to be installed. It has a retaining ring around the air filter. So only engine compartment air is what the engine gets unfortunately. EGTs might be lower otherwise. You could probably disconnect your air filter snorkel to pull in warmer air to raise EGTs if you are worried about it, but it might hurt your MPG? Dunno.

What did Hotshot do for you?

Im still using the factory water outlet housing......Im thinking my timing is off. I am going to pull a heavy gooseneck trailer next month Ill try to get a reading on the manifold......

Pull a hill @ 1200 rpm in 4th gear with your foot to the floor. The manifolds will be hot then.

Let me clarify.... the thermostat housing has 3 small holes. 2 for bolts and the 3rd one is an air bleed port to allow air to get out from below the thermostat. These engines will not warm up with even the smallest amount of coolant flow. The Motorcraft thermostat for this engine is essentially sealed when closed, so tight air won’t bleed out.
The air bleed port is supposed to have an apx. 1/4” diameter ball trapped by a retainer that rattles around and lets air out but stops most coolant flow. If the ball is missing the coolant flow through the apx. 11/32 hole will allow enough coolant flow to prevent full warm up under light load.

chris 142 I would have to drive a fair piece to find a hill. This area is so flat if your dog runs out the front gate, you can still see him running away 2 days later.
