I'd never buy a rebuilt transmission from any outfit that wasn't a member of ATRA (Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association) Back in the 80's ATRA stepped in and made good a poor rebuild of a TH400. No charge. I'll never forget. This outfit might be good - have no idea.

What did your trans build cost you and when did you do it?
Ehheh… uh… well since I added so many upgrades, it was 6.5 or 7 thousand, not including specialty tools, which was $500 in cost.

It’s not really finished, so… guess you could say I’m still doing it. Subassemblies are reassembled, but haven’t been reinstalled. Cooler and filter have been mocked up, but not all have been reinstalled. Haven’t messed with the Baumann, all I’ve done is opened the box it came in lol.

This 94 project is very drawn out, and fall/winter is when I have the most time to deal with it. So I’ve mostly been accumulating parts during the summer, since I’m not home very often this time of year, what with working out of state and all. I used to have a little more time in the summer than I currently do, but life changes.

Update, on the way home this evening , ol Black Betty went down. All forward gears quit working, only has reverse. Trans was 183 degrees going 60 mph when forward gears just stopped working.
Either the forward clutch failed, or the feed bolts have backed out.

Feed bolts can be re tightened. The clutch require rebuilding.

Glad to hear you chime in trackspeeder. What are the chances the torque converter gave up? I'm pretty sure I've had trouble with it locking for years, and shudder

I agree...the first hint of forward clutch distress was the shudder on acceleration. @trackspeeder knows what he is talking about.

If it went out you wouldn't have reverse either.
@Rdnck84_03 is pretty savvy, too...he is talking about the torque convertor.

If a torque convertor strips the splines, breaks a weld you would not have any motion, either direction. On the other hand, bearings and washers chewing up leads to a slow, horrible death from metal shavings that stop up stuff.

As far as rebuilding the unit yourself...how long can you be without the truck? You only want to do it right the first time and the learning curve is kinda steep if you have never done one before.

Don't get me wrong...I encourage you to tackle it, but I hope you have a good friend to help mentor you along for this one.

The E4OD is a big, beautiful, unit...kinda makes me want to cradle it in my arms and slowly rock it to sleep. I was saying that about that unit 'way before 'big and beautiful' became a catchphrase...sorry....

It IS a magnificent piece of engineering...find you another core unit and take it apart and see what I am talking about.

Anyway...once you decide to fix it...you have to make sure all of the electronics and connections are sound...or else you are going to have trouble.

On the subject of pulling codes...some codes that are generated while you are in motion might be erased when you shut it off...if you want the whole story you need a scan tool or code reader that will give you codes KOEO and KOER. Ford was slow in providing 'live' data until forced to around 1995 or therabouts...so...you might have a little trouble, there.

Keep your head straight and don't give up !! Most of all...don't do this...

Good luck on it..!!

Take care,

X

Go do a search on You Tube for "Transmission Bench" This guy has a full course on the E4OD where he does a full teardown and rebuild while explaining all the steps and what's needed. He shows how to make tools and do this efficiently and professionally. With the proper amount of space, a mechanical person can rebuild it after following his videos.

A standard rebuild kit, solenoid pack, range sensor, triple disc torque converter, Transgo kit, external filter, and cooler upgrade should run you about 3-3.5k dollars. Maybe 4k.
Thank you all for your comments and help in this matter. I just need me a go fund me account to afford it!
The Baumann and billet shafts and drums, and the dual thermostatically regulated cooler system were what drove the price of my rebuild that much higher.

I probably be better off going with this from trans depot then.

I had to see what they offered. A billet converter is good, better than a stamped cover. They don't say how many disk in the converter. Multi disk is the way to go. Two disk is good. Three is best.

The "cooling pan" isn't needed. A bigger cooler is a must. If the pan is part of the package, run it. Add the bigger cooler to the list.
