DROPPED LIFTER

I Have A Pushrod Not Working On The Third Cyl On The Driver Side Of My 1989 F-250 7.3 Idi. I Think It Is The Lifter, My Question Is What All Di I Have To Remove To Get To The Lifters And How Do The Lifters Come Out, Thanks For Any Help I Have Always Done My Own Work But I Have Never Went Into A Motor, I Put Nes Pump And Injectors Nd Lines On It About A Year Ago So I Think I Can Do This Also, I Can't Afford To Take It To Somebody To Fix It.

You have to remove the injection pump and lines ( leave the lines attached to the pump, just undo them from the injectors) don't remove the upper gear cover if you can help it that way you don't have to deal with gear timing, There are three bolts inside a small cover on front of upper gear housing that go into the injection pump drive that need removed (careful don't drop them into gear train) remove the intake and the valley pan (don't forget to remove the plug at rear of valley pan) Once that is off you can see whats going on with that lifter and remove it. Hope it didn't do something to chew up the cam.

THANKS I HOPE SO TO I HOPE TO START ON IT TOMORROW BUT I HAVE TO WORK ON IT OUTSIDE AND IT IS 15 DEGREES HERE.DO THYE COME OUT FROM THE BOTTOM UNDER THE VALLEY PAN

Once you get the valley pan off you will see that they will come out very easy after removing the retainer. Good luck

Seeing this is your "first time" take plenty of pictures. That way you wont forget how things looked when you put it back together. I do this all the time so I don't forget. I suffer from CRS... Don't loose that rear valley pan plug cause Ford or International doesn't make them any longer. Nobody does. I bought 10% of the last Ford had so I have some spares... The valley pan is cheapest from Northern Autoparts and the Felpro part number is MS96038. They also can sell you a set of lifters on the cheap side too... Or shop Ebay right now. There are several sellers and some are $150.00 for a set.

Don't know which engine you have, but beware. One some of our engines the valley pan also seals several water passages in the head. You should drain your cooling system first, unless you want water in your crankcase. Be sure to observe the correct torque sequence when dealing with your intake.

Also make a very close inspection of the camshaft lobe for the collapsed lifter.

Darrin had a truck with a dead cylinder and that ended up being a collapsed lifter. But closer look at the cam did show some damage.

Not sure how long it was driven that way but it won't hurt to check.
