Compression Test Results

Well, Today I really got into this mess. First off my internet connectivity was bad so said the stupid message. That started last nite around 730pm. So heres what I have. The high was 530 lbs and the low was 510 lbs..... Only 4 and 5 were 510 lbs. Then I pop tested all the injecters. Found two that were leakers. So I made up a set with 1900 lbs being the lowest and 1950 lbs being the highest. All had a good spray pattern. All the Beru glow plugs looked great and came out easily. I have the new Pensacola turbo injection pump ready to install tomorrow. So things have been busy here today but its been a good day....

Yeah, 500+ compression? Only in my dreams.

Both of my IDI's are in the 400+ arena.

Diesile... This motor has around 12 thousand miles on the bore and about 6 thousand miles on the pistons so its still breaking in. What happened is I lost 2 freeze plugs. The first one popped out after I drove 3 miles to get the motor timed. The second one let go around 5500 miles while pulling a 6% grade. I never saw anything and then it was the oil temp passing 330 degrees and the lifters making a terrible noise till it stopped and froze up. So the sleeves were saved but 6 of 8 pistons started to scuff near the bottom of the shirts. I replaced both cracked heads, all the bearings and lifters with the pistons too. So I have another rebuilt motor running fine now. This work I'm doing to the fuel system is only for testing. I'm really happy with the famous Moose Pump but want some numbers of before and after for everyones information.

icanfixall, With luck/trouble like that you have earned those compression #'s!!
Both of mine have 150k+. Do many IDI's start out with #ers in the 500 range?

I have watched the post concerning the moose pump and am convinced myself that it is a good addition. As soon as I recover from unexpected costs swapping a factory turbo 7.3 into my '86, that is on my to do list.

My original motor with either 275 or 375,000 miles on it still had 480 lbs of compression. Now that was a great stock motor. It even had an original head gasket on one side. The other side was a Felpro because I caviated number 8 cylinder and sleeved it. I told the shop to replace the head gasket while the motor was out and on the stand. They said it wasn't needed but I told them to change it anyway.. They didn't so these old head gaskets can last a long time even with a turbo boosting 10 to 12 lbs like I did for years. Yes... I have had plenty of crappy luck with this truck and motor. If I didn't have the truck life would probably be much differant. I wouldn't have much to do at all...

Sounds good Gary. Maybe you can bring those along for a "compression test" clinic and/or a "injector test" clinic at the Rally. They would be great compainions to Mel's "Timing" clinic.

If you are still having trouble..........PM Mel (Agnem) and he'll get you in. It has information on the Rally and there is a Contact list and lots of stuff from past rallies. Sorry 'bout that.
