So, I was changing the fuel mechanical lift pump on my '95 F250 FWD. I had just got it out and cleaning up the valley and, although I literally said I should put a rag over the hole the pump sits in I didn't, and I dropped a 1/4" 5/16th socket in the hole. The good news was it didn't fall into the engine but was just under the lip of the hole on top of the cam shaft. Was. I got a telescoping magnet and has ahold of it yet with due carelessness dropped it further inside.
Now the big question. Is that 5/16th socket gonna cause a problem or destroy my engine?

No.
Many people have pulled the pan to find several fuel pump pistons.
Have you pulled the drain plug and fished a magnet around?

No, I wasn't at all certain where it would go at that point or if it would be accessible. I couldn't seem to find a great diagram of the engine, but it didn't look like it would make it all the way to the oil pan.
Pulling freeze plugs is a possible method of finding it?

Pulling freeze plugs will do you no good. It wouldn't go into the cooling system. It would fall to the pan.
Turn the engine over by hand.

If unable to retrieve it through the drain hole, get a new drain plug with an earth magnet in it. That should be strong enough to hold it when it rolls around.

crank engine over by hand a couple times. Probably will stay just find at the bottom of that giant sump of an oil pan.
