Pump should come with a check valve. If I remember right it helps maintain case pressure and help prevent fuel drain back. You can run without it, from what I've heard is all it does if removed is change the cold advance a little, but runs normal when hot.

Without the valve regulating housing pressure, it will run like the cold advance is on at all times.
The cold advance sol. Just holds that ball off the seat when energized.
