Good afternoon. I installed a banks sidewinder wastegated kit this weekend. I had read that some guys leave the waste gate disconnected, so I tried it. The truck runs great, but the boost can get as high as 20 psi. Is that normal? We have since hooked the wastegate hose up and it is maxing out at 9 psi. If I get a boost controller, what is a safe boost level? It is a stock 6.9 with 60000 original miles from a 1986 E350 motorhome. Thanks

You should be able to adjust the waste gate. My banks can be adjusted as little as 5 and as much as 18-20. I’ve got it set at 10max. It will still spin the tires and tow 10,000lbs egts stay under 1000 and the mpgs is still great. I usually run 6-8 unless I’m pulling a hill.

On a 6.9 without head studs, I would keep boost/power conservative. I would Probably leave it at that 9 with the pump turned up a little.

My first gen banks kit was set at somewhere like 7-8 lbs. of boost max with the Banks exhaust. Also, if you're running it up in that neighborhood you need an EGT gauge to be safe. Banks documents what your vitals should look like when your engine is running heavy and unloaded.

I’d bet you’re lacking some fuel to match boost but that’s ok. If it performs the way you want then less fuel is good. Also timing usually comes down a little with a turbo.

And no one sees a problem with the turbo way out of it efficiency map beating the air into a hot expanded mass and not pushing any more molecules of air in. Sure lots of volume but nothing in it. Only way it would be lifting heads is if fuel is added. 18 psi on that set is just lifting air inlet temp and egr. More air and boost not going to significantly increase combustion pressures without the fuel.

I said he is probably lacking the fuel but if it does what he needs it to do why sacrifice mph if you don’t need to.

Dont have a map for that compressor but doubt the 18psi you speak of is way out of its efficiency range. Also didnt see anyone for leaving it with the wastegate non functional.
Agree on boost alone not adding significant cylinder pressure without fuel to burn up that oxygen, creating more combustion pressure.
We have plenty of fuel. It’s a 6.9 with a 7.3 pump. We turned it up according to the banks instructions but we have too much fuel at this point. It will easily produce plenty of black smoke down low and lugging. We are turning the pump down as well.
