Those were really tough little cars. With a little diesel it would be a neat commuter.

Chevy made a Geo Metro diesel for a few years a long time ago. It was a three liter engine and about half of them were convertibles. There are a some guys who are putting Kubota diesels in them now. Pretty cool stuff.

Today's VW TDIs are the great-grandchildren of that mid-'80s small diesel craze, and are about the only living descendents in the US. There were a LOT of contenders back then, even a Chevette. My FIL's mid-'80s Rabbit got 55 MPG, until some hit-and-run drunk totalled it. The last survivors of that era, the Escorts and Chevettes and VW sissy-pickups etc, are highly sought by take out restaurants (pizza, Mexican, etc), that run them on they fryer grease. That demand is helping to maintain at least some level of parts availability.

If you think your stock N/A IDI can't get out of its own way, you'll think it's a rocket after driving one of these.....
