whats going on oilburners;Sweet just a quick question i was wondering if i could rebulid my idi with powerstroke pistons and rods..... from what i was told the idi`s compression is way to high for high boost and the powerstroke has a lower compression... just wondering if i could build a set up with powerstroke parts  thanks for info

Like said, nope, wont work. You can buy a little lower compression pistons from Mahle I believe. Or you can have a machine shop take some off the top of the pistons to lower compression.

All idi pistons are 560 to 570 thousands thick at the center of the piston. I talked to an Engineer at Mahle (Eric) and he told me not to mill more than 20 off the pistons. More would cause the top ring to heat up and fail. So for someone that knows this is the answer. They also sell a low compression piston that has the pin machined 10 thousnads higher in the piston so it lowers it that much in the bore. I milled 14 thousands off my low comp pistons and still have 530 lbs of compression... The psd pistons will fit our cylinders but the depression in the tops will kill the combustion.Sorry.... As posted the rods are around 130 thousands too wide to fit the crank. The turbo rods for the idi are plenty strong for anything. You wont break them thats for sure... Even the stock idi rods are plenty strong... They can survive 4400 rpm easily....:sly

I didn't know the idi had a weak mechanical link? Except maybe the head bolts on the 6.9?

The 6.9 head bolts are about the only real issues any idi has. No if we can create a cam for these motors I think the hp would be found...:sly

stock head bolts do suck but studs is the cure, and it would be nice to have cams redily availible for all applications
