Good Morning Fellas,

I am looking for some advice on where to buy a replacement IP for my 93 7.3. I am looking to stay away from the local NAPA store if at all possible. It is a NA motor with an ATS aftermarket setup on it. I am looking for a good value, of course, along with a quality pump. Not really picky if it is rebuilt or new as long as I know I am getting a quality product. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

This has been discussed quite a bit. If you search you'll find plenty of threads discussing it.

Many people recommend Moose products, and from what I've read they're no doubt the best. However, there is a good wait time and cost is definitely up there.

I'm happy with my pump from Oregon Fuel Injection. I think it was $440. Just make sure you check beforehand that the core you're going to send them is the right one. I was going to buy one for a turbo 7.3, since I have a turbo, however the core charge is $400. The core for a 6.9 pump, which I had to give as a core, was only $250. So if I'd bought the 7.3 turbo pump and sent my old pump in, the IP would have wound up costing an extra $150.

Uhaul was recently selling pumps for $250, which is hard to beat. Not entirely sure on quality though. There's plenty of places that sell them for less than $440, I researched and decided I'd rather pay the extra and have reasonable assurance that I was getting a good pump that would last.

Welcome to the forum first off. Now what makes you feel your pump is needing replacement. Miles are a good way to tell if a pump is about worn out. If you have over 100,000 miles on the pump and injectors its just about time to replace all of this. The usual life time is not much more than 150,000 miles. You need to know what to remove and what not to remove when changing an injection pump. Done properly you can't make any mistakes. The pump will only fit the drive gear one way because of the locating pin. Some interesting tools are rewuired to remove and install a pump. Plenty of information here for the asking. Please ask questions before turning a wrench. As posted above these are fine places to buy a pump. Read the HALL OF SHAME forum about some of the comments members have had buying from a few suppliers of pumps..

if you can wait, a moose pump would be a first choice, but if you are in a jam, ask around the local IH big truck dealership where a Stanadyne authorized pump shop is in your area . You will generally get a quality rebuild from a local certified shop who will stand behind their build, so you have someone nearby who knows they have to face you, but here's the kicker, it's going to cost you about the same as a Moose pump  ( which really makes you wonder what exactly these places like Pensacola and diesel careless are actually doing that they call a *rebuild* when they sell them for around half the price or less ... sounds like a quick dip in the cleaner and a new set of seals and out the door)

Let me start with a thanks for the info. I bought the truck 2 1/2 years ago from the second owner with 185,000 on it and replaced the injectors, glow plugs, and return lines shortly thereafter, not long after that I replaced lift pump. Truck started running rough at startup and smoking quite a bit when cold about a year ago, I have advanced the IP pump a little bit twice now and it starts and idles smooth and smoke free for a few months, then slowly starts to get worse again. From what I read on this forum, it seems like the IP is all that is left. I ran into the original owner a year ago on the side of the road and I am now positive that I am still running the original IP, therefore I think it needs to be replaced. I will do some digging around on the site here and see what I can find out about the Moose Pump, all I remember reading in the past is that is the only way to go if a guy can afford it. Thanks again for the info!
