So I had already swapped all of my trucks to 3G except Ernest. I figured it was time this fall and got one ordered up. I got this one which I put in my 6.9 with no issues: https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-3G-Alt...-7-3-130-AMP-/401258487106?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1
Now, the alternator works totally fine in my 6.9 never heard a chirp or a screech etc. In my 7.3 right after starting it cold before doing the swap I would sometimes get some chirping from the belt until the alternator caught up which was annoying. Even worse was if you left and got out on the road right away it would really howl the belt good until it was driving for 5 minutes and then it was fine. I was hoping this would go away and it was just the alternator being hard to turn but sure enough when I took it off it was pretty easy to turn.
The new alternator is on and its worse. I feel like the belt is pretty tight:
I guess I could get a pry bar and tighten it more but I shouldn't have to I don't think. The belt sits way too high in the pulley. Come to think of it, I don't remember it sitting so high in the other pulley that was on the old 1g alternator.
Does anyone know if the pulleys on these aren't the same width if anyone else has used the 3G I got? And am I right to think that the belt sitting so high in the pulley could be contributing to the screech? I know it was a gates green belt I got from oreilly's for everything a year ago. I just can't remember what the numbers were to verify what width they were to look them up and see if I did something stupid. I gotta spin the engine to the right spot to find the label on that belt and the belt on the 6.9 and look them up I guess but the 6.9 is out on loan to my dad to haul stuff at work this week as they needed extra trucks for all the equipment their using on the job hence the 7.3 getting called into work for a rare week in winter.
Any help and thoughts appreciated, figured I'd try and tackle this one and test it while I drive it this week.
