But to keep the battery topped off in winter, or at least reduce the discharge, gives it a bit of help in the starting process. I've never tried those battery blankets, so I can't comment on them, but would like to try them as well.

Curious about this as well, maintainers vs. battery blanket, IMHO I think that a little charge would generate some heat inside the battery, not as much as a blanket, but like you said the batteries are getting a little charge...???
