In the UK until the sprinter series of panel vans came out no private courier driver would drive a Mercedes by choice.
as I would say back home in the England 'Nuff said'

The moderator on that superturbo forum is my son. He is in the process of building a SD engine to really rock and roll, of course I am helping him.:D
Are you referring to Brandon or BHD?

I remember Brandon from my days on MBShop...good guy...

One way or another, I'd love to see the end result of this...one of my dreams is an R107 roadster with a "built" 617 anbd a 5 speed manual... :D

i went 4 wheeling with a guy that had an International Wagonmaster (4 door short box pickup) with a 5 cyl Mercades in it. it was gutless... :puke: in 4WD Lo (no idea rear end ratio) it could barley get the tires spinning in slick mud, it was working just to move! i'd stick with the 6.9/7.3. ;Sweet

My bet is that was the non turbo version, or a turbo that was not working right. The turbo makes a huge difference--like 50" more power ( about 85 to about 130).
Mercedes guys know how to turn up their pumps and make adjustments to the ALDA to generate more power, too.

still, you're talking about 130 hp vs. 175 hp out of a 6.9. i imagine there would be at least a 75-100 ft.lb. difference in torque output as well. not to mention less than half the displacement

what about a Ranger or S10 with the 5 cylinder? they would weigh closer to what the MB weighs and would likely offer similar economy and performance. the extended cab small trucks are roomy enough for a commuter

Brandon.
I am going to put his other engine in a 57 dodge pickup with a six speed of some sort, should be fun.

Back in the days of the 55 mph speed limit I had a 61 International 110 series (5/8 ton) with a worn out 304 V8. A friend had a low mileage 4 cyl Scout engine 152 cu inch for $70. I swapped it into the truck (super easy swap). It kept up with traffic just fine and had a real low granny gear (for emergency). I once grossed out at over 12K lbs. going from Barstow to Victorville (40 mi.). I was in 3rd more than 4th but made the trip with no prob. Only problem was when loaded with wood coming out of the mountains. I was in granny a lot to save the brakes. It worked for me and was a $270. truck.

I had a 300sd . That thing couldn't get out of it's own way, but it was so stinkin' comfortable I couldn't care less when driving the thing. I used to regularly find myself driving 50mph on the interstate without a care in the world.
Those engines are sturdy, but not a lot of oomph to them even when running in top shape and unlike truck diesels, the power is higher up in the rpm range. Once you get them wound up tight, they'll do OK, but that power range doesn't lend itself well to trucks unless you have some seriously low gearing, even in a Ranger.

+1

BTW, I looked it up...the turbo 617 (5 cylinder) put out about 125 horsepower and 170 ft-lbs of torque...and, as Robert said, most of that power's at the higher RPM's.

The two that I've owned generally like to cruise between 2500 and 3000 RPM, translating into about 65 to 70 mph. IMHO anything under about 2500's almost lugging...and, the engine governs out at 5500 RPM IIRC (although neither of mine are happy about 4500 RPM)...

If someone wants to try this, it'd be interesting to see the results, but I still contend that this engine won't work too well in a full-size pickup (even an F-150, although I do think it'd be perfect for a Ranger or smaller truck), even for just freeway cruising...you'd be better off with an engine about halfway between the 617 and the 6.9l in size. A 4BT Cummins, maybe?
