I recently bought a 94 F250 4x4 with the non turbo 7.3L in it it only has 76 thousand miles on it and picked it up for a steal but it has a four speed in it and at 55mph its pushing 26to2800 rpm and i was wondering if thats a little high cuz my first thought was that the gearing is too low but i cant seem to find any zf5s in the state and was wondering what a good price range would be for one if if i should go back with the original auto that someone replaced with this for speed but i cant seem to find any of those in state either. your advice and opions are appreciated

Thats way high, either your tach is off or your truck could pull a convienent store down the road.

no someone burned up the automatic at 30k and replaced it with a four speed i am looking for a zf5 or an E40D cuz i think that trans is too low of gearing for the truck, and yes it probably could pull a store lol but tach is working properly

if it's a 4-spd manual, then I'm willing to bet you have the T-19, which is a non-overdrive tranny.

In 4th gear with 4.10's and stock 235/85/16's, you should be pulling around 2400 rpms at 55 mph.

it has 285 75 16s on it but is that high of rpms good for the engine, plus would a zf5 or a E40D be better for the truck? i am new to the diesel thing so all of ur inquiries are very much appreciated.. would it be worth the money to put a chip or a turbo in? if so what brand and prices?

You could bounce it off the governor all day long and be just fine. These engines are tough and they can handle it. If you want to maintain your sanity however, and maybe see some decent MPG, a ZF5 would be a good choice, and should be a simple swap. Several here have done it. Unless you're dead set on having an auto, I wouldn't put an E4OD there. They are prone to failure unless you spend some $$$ on upgrades.

A turbo is probably the best investment you can make as far as increasing power. These engines are not computer controlled, so you can't install a chip. It's all mechanical. Some of the upgrades out there are turbo, injection pump(talk to the user Agnem about his Moose Pump), injectors, and an intercooler. If you run over 10-12 psi of boost, you will want to install head studs for peace of mind. There is a lot of knowledge here about these old engines, and properly maintained, they'll haul whatever you want for as long as you want.

Do your self a huge favor and slap a zf5 in it, not the E40D. Your already set with a manual trans, just put the good one in it now. Just find one, it's well worth the wait. Going back to auto would be foolish now.
