1986 Truck Problem.

Hmm, well heres the thing, im no mechanic. If the perfect tools were in front of my, i would not know what to do with them. Would you be willing to do the work for me? I can pay you of course, i just want someone that has worked on these trucks before. Let me know if your interested and what your price would be, need this truck running asap, need it for work

Thanks for the updates on who the shop was... Its not the shop I thought it might be.... The clutch noise could be the throwout bearing too. usually the dueal mass flywheel isn't used on the 4 speed trans. Are you running coolant.. If not the radiator may have some pluggage. A leaking head gasket will make the coolant look like it has oil in it because the diesel gets pushed into the coolant as combustion happens.... Not all of the diesel burns during ignition. If you find that you need to replace a head gasket its best to remove the engine and do it on a stand. I can lone you my stand for this. When the engine is out do the oil cooler too. You will have easy access to it and no better time for that job. Try draining down some coolant so you can see the top of the radiator ftubes. If they have corrosion buildup around the tubes then its cleanout time or replacement time... Only using distilled water will keep these radiators from the tap water corrosion buildup.... I don't know of the shop you took the truck to either but they seem like they were looking to make a killing off of you...

I've known a couple guys who have parted ways with their IDI trucks because of issues similar to what you are having. They all ended up regretting it.

I think you've got a real nice setup there, and with a little muscle you will have a solid running truck.

Thanks for your reply. I heard about these studs in the Ford truck forums, through lots and lots of reading and a Victor Reinz head gasket (supposedly the best?) so i went ahead and ordered them about 3 days ago. Can you please click the links below and tell me if i got the right parts? I typed in my correct info and thats what I came up with.

Very nice truck. The slantnose (80-86) bodystyle is one of my favorites!!! I believe you got a good deal even with the problem you have found. Once fixed you will have an extremely nice truck.

The southern and west coast trucks make me drool!!!!!! I have not seen 80's era trucks look that nice (except for a handful) in that kind of condition since........ the 80's!!!!! The stuff I have seen hauled to the junkyard as rusty from out there is very nice for here. I have seen trucks that are 5 years old and less in worse shape that your 25 year old truck is!!! I will have to get a southern vehicle when I get another slantnose......

Some things to be aware of...

Your engine probably does have more than 1 thing wrong with it. The first problem, may be the cause of the second problem. You could have:

A bad oil cooler, or O-ring problem.
A bad head gasket
A cracked head
A cavitated cylinder
A plugged radiator
Contaminated oil

Now, in order to keep yourself from getting screwed over, you have 2 options. Do all the work yourself, with our instruction. Or, take it to a COMPETENT shop who is seriously interested in helping you, instead of ****** you.

If that is the case, you have to get a replacment head. Not bad. Cavitation could happen on a 6.9, but it is rare. That would be doom for the block. You'd need another block or have the sucker sleeved.

here's my .02...bear in mind I have a fleet of working IDI's and most are towtrucks.
If you are in need to put the truck into service, find a lowly std cab 2wd truck on CL and buy it. have the motor stripped out of it and stuffed into yours. I routinely will pay $500 for a truck with a good motor that I can hear run and test drive.

I have a Uhaul 1988/89 International Moving truck, its a 7.3 Litre Diesel link below.

It has been non op for two years now, no longer using it just my other uhaul truck (same year and make). I bought these when I was 19 and started my moving business, i also have a 17ft moving truck but that one i cant touch, its my brothers main moving truck.

Can I put that engine in my truck (if my engine is dead). I noticed that it says it gets 8-10 MPG, is that because its hauling 12,500lbs empty weight instead of my 4400lbs F250??

No way I would put that 7.3Liter engine if its going to get 10 mpg. The truck is strong, but when our moving biz slowed down in 2008 we parked it, non op'd it and have removed the radiator to place in my working International. Is this engine too big for my truck? If it can get 18MPG or so when taking away the 8000 lbs difference, I will be happy!

Will it work??

but whatever you do..... DO NOT PUT THE UHAUL PUMP ON THE DONOR MOTOR.
use the injection pump that is currently mounted on the pickup.

The mileage is probably because of gearing, not weight. The 7.3 engine will be just fine in your 86 if you want to take the time and effort to swap it out. but if you already have the 6.9 out, it is easier to fix it than make two projects. Heads are readily available if you need one.

Yes, it will work, but it is a lot more work to change 2 engines than to repair one. Your call. The 7.3 and 6.9 engines are identical on the outside, only larger pistons on the 7.3.

I see. The only reason i would want to swap would be if my heads were cracked or rod was broken worse comes to worse. I find out tomorrow what is wrong with my truck, if its just a busted head gasket, I will just have them fix the 6.9 since i have the studs and gaskets already coming in the mail. I really want to keep the 6.9 i hear it has thicker cylinder walls or something like that and that its more reliable than the 7.3. Plus now That I remember I have the 7.3, I can always post in on Craigslist and Sell it for... how much can i get for it? its a SOLID motor, not trying to sell my product here, but it really does, hauled heavy loads on that 26ft box truck, even made trips from LA to Lancaster (long uphill and about 75 miles) slow, but got the job done.
