Good deal or not?

Went to an auction. The vehicle was thrashed. The bidders wanted the IDI engine, and it sold for $1500.

What are you guys paying for rebuilts and takeouts, and where are you getting them. There are NONE in the dozen junkyards near me. I plan on keeping my vehicle for another decade, and will need another engine in a few years.

Good price for a PSD but IMHO not for an IDI. When they pop up around here they're usually around 800 or so and come with a factory encasing (ie whole truck)

Texas doesn't count. Good cheap diesel pickups with a stinkpot of miles on them grow on trees there -cuss
kali diesels don't lead nowhere as abused lives as they do in TX.
my usual price for a motor with a factory wrapper is 400-800. bonus monies paid for ZF5 equipped trucks.

I had a 7.3 given to me, with only about 55 - 60K miles on it...complete.

If you were to get one with the original box still on it, you can expect to pau between $500 and $1500 for one, and that's with no ZF, no D60...just a rusted out old truck...and I mean RUSTED.

IDI vehicles are pretty scarce around here (Albaturkey, NM). I've only found one in a junkyard, and that was stripped down to nothing usable left, in less than a week.

I will probably have to buy a rebuilt, or have someone rebuild mine. Anyone been there, done that? How long? Cost?

No way spend that much on a used engine, especially when you've got time. I spent $300 on one with all accessories & IP, and will take it to a local machinist when I'm ready. Big mill long blocks seem to go for $3-5k.

I have paid as little as 150 for a complete engine and as much and 400, i would never pay over 500 dollars for an engine, i only payed 600 for my 86LOL and its a rust free dent free truck

I've been picking up 4x4 350s for under a grand. One of them had less then 100k on it. Its all about being patient and waiting for a deal to come up. I have an app on my phone that searches craigslist all day and that helps a lot for finding deals.
