Just picked up a '90 F350 with the 10.25 rearend that apparently has limited slip according to the tag on the rearend. Truck has 190k and it just does the one tire fire thing all the time. My previous truck was a '85 with a dana 70 that had over 200k on it and the limited slip worked awesome- both tires always spun. Neither rearends had new clutches put in them.

So my question is do the 10.25 limited slips just suck in comparison to the Dana 70's? Another factor in the equation is my old truck was a reg cab 2wd with 33's and my new truck is a crew cab 4x4 on 35's. New truck in sig and old truck was NA 6.9.

The 10.25 is just a limited slip, it may have worn clutches, very likely. The dana probably had a power lock in it and they are much more aggressive. It also could have had a detroit locker in it and they dont ever one wheel wonder, unless broken.

The stock limited slip in the sterlings just don't seem to hold up that well, especially if the friction modifier additive hasn't been kept in it. Most re builders don't consider the trac lok worth rebuilding. I have been considering a locker in mine especially since I run 35s

My 10.25" Sterling limited slip works great - 425,000KM on it too.....Everybody seems to get "Dana Mania" but personally I don't find their axles any better than the rest. Driver abuse probably caused pre-mature wear in that axle.

I've worked on both..and even thought about swappin to a 10.25/50 in the van...the bearings are WAY bigger...seals better..shafts bigger...

but as long as it stays together...Im not worried..

I'd rebuild it..or weld it..(open carrier)..

Problem with the darn 70's is the serviceability. I'm getting ready to put one in the Moosestang, and dread pulling axles to do brakes.

You're saying the sterling is the one with bigger parts?

Wait so the sterling has slide on/off drums? Thats kind of nice, i'm used to pulling axles/hubs when doing brakes on full floaters.
