Ok so there aren't any clamps or anything it goes through on its way to the starter. Just make sure it is clear of any moving parts and the exhaust. Are there any grounds that come off either battery other than to the block?

just a thought but have you checked the tank selector fuse i had almost the same problem in my 88 and found that the fuse was gone put one in and the switch works again.

did u turn the drive shafts by hand or what? if the front still turns when you put it in 4wd then its not the chain. if you can leave it in 4wd and turn just 1 driveshaft them id say the chain is shot but if they both turn together id look at something different
