Well, since we're on this kick, I'll share. I learned to weld when I was 15-16 from my oldest brother (11yrs my senior and since passed away) but I refused to buy a welder until a couple years ago because I know that if I had a welder I wouldn't throw stuff away and I'd have a big pile of junk and an excuse to keep it all...... you know the excuse, "all it needs is a bit of weld......" "As soon as I can get a piece of angle, that'll be done and I can sell it for......." "That just needs a patch of steel on the........." But with my bustling mower stuff I had to get one for decks and mufflers. I just got a cheap Ironton Northern tool thing. At some point I'll get a Lincoln 125 like my brother got me going on....... and oh yeah.......I got a pile of junk to weld on now.....

I know the feeling, Brother-Man...but I also feel so capable...anything I can dream up...I can make.

I like to 'save' stuff from the crusher, landfill, or china...it is my way of being 'green'...and conserving the energy that was spent making things in the first place...

I am going to make a steel rocking chair, soon...you watch...

Right now I am converting a steel shipping crate into a 4x8 welding work table...the crate was originally configured to ship a disassembled tractor to a Dealer...and it is going to get re-purposed...

I applaud anyone that uses their talents to create things...real, tangible, useful things...and those that fix things that people need or can use...

Hooray for all of you...

I totally agree. I'm actually so into reperposing things that I take used motor oil that people are sometimes going to dump on the ground or just haul off to who knows where and I turn it into a viable fuel for my truck! I'm saving the world.....

I don't know, I can't get behind that one. It's like saying I don't want a fork because if I have one I'll eat too much and get fat. Look at it this way, while collecting all that scrap metal you could branch into a different medium for cupholders. Instead of wood you could use metal. Make cupholders that look like little riding mowers that are chasing Yankees north of the Georgia/ Florida line. Think of the possibilities.

I would be proud to be a rock clunker...it takes some stones to strap on PPE and a helmet for most people...

I know you can't relate...and I would not either...but consider this...

Do you know how many people there are out there that...to them...to actually WELD something...much less get close to any form of electricity....is a totally foreign concept to them...?

Part of me wonders if that is part of why I got it into. It seemed like some kind of crazy high tech wizardry back when I was in middleschool/highschool era. Now its so integral to my everyday that I dont give it a second thought.

Some years ago, my now wife's mom mentioned that she was throwing out her late husband's old recliner due to the hinging mechanism breaking. My wife's father had passed away when she was in highschool, some 25 years ago or so and this dusty old recliner (which doesnt fit her mother's house in any way now) is one of the few things they still have of his.

I went up after work one day, dismantled as much of this darn chair as I could, sure enough, the steel hinge brackets had broken, causing the chair to overextended and flip the person backwards if they reclined it. Well, I pulled out my trusty old Hobart 140 and a grinder, clean er up, welded the brackets back together and welded in a plate toe help reinforce it. Welds arent my best but considering how awkward it was to get inside the chair to hit them, im pretty happy, and the Wifey's mom still has the dusty old recliner right in the middle of the living room where its sat for nearly 40 years.

There is a certain comfort in keeping some things like they always have been...

He must have been a good man...

and with that 'darn' chair still there...his presence and guidance is still being felt...

That is a very good human interest story...it says a lot that you did that for your wife and mother-in-law...the Dad and Husband was taken from them much too soon...
