I’m thinking of buying some filter heads and putting them on the pressure side of my electric lift pump for added filtration. What does everyone think of this idea? If I do it I will post about install with pics

I've run both an extra filter before and after the lift pump, both ran just fine. This is also with a mechanical lift pump, so I'd imagine it would be easier to get any air out with an electric one.

What's your stock filter doing?

I like to run a coarser element water separator on the suction side and a finer secondary filter on the pressure side.

Stacking extra filters in series can prove redundant, and a flow restriction.

Do we need added filtration with the advent of common rail diesel? Figuratively speaking, I figured we could run fine sand through our system compared to the newer diesels.

I get a common filter to serve all your diesels, I have 3 with a potential 4th from different makes.

I agree with the strainer/WS before and a 5-10 micron (guessing) filter after. Is the factory filter becoming obsolete or a known issue like the dodge/Cummins disagreement in filtering requirements?

Not dissing you @KansasIDI, just trying to keep money in our pockets if it’s not necessary.

This is the "best" way to have the filters.

It's not just the added filtration. The coarse filter before the electric pump is to keep bigger stuff from getting into the pump and of course the water separator like u2slow said. Then you want the finer one between the pump and the engine just in case something starts going bad inside your lift pump.

I get what you’re saying @Cant Write , but I did not fully explain myself. I want (not need) a different fuel filtration system. Since I have a 6.9, I have a water separator on the firewall. I want to delete that, I think I am getting minor air intrusion there. My stock filter head up by the passenger side battery is developing a leak at the schrader valve and also up in the head somewhere or another. It must have a hairline crack. Rather than getting a new stock filter head, I would like to get a filter head for one CAT fuel filter and also one for a CAT water separator. I don’t think those fuel filters will be obsolete for awhile, but I KNOW that CAT filters are good and they will keep making them. Better filtration and longer service intervals. Win win. Filter heads are $70 a whack and the required hoses and fittings are cheap. With all that replaced then I know where I’m at on it. Thats why I want to do it.

Filters should also be changed roughly every other oil change, so is it really that much you're saving? I have the suction side filter on my truck for the last 5 years. Still no issue.

Also, this is how I have my filter, tapped in right after the selector valve. 10 micron, max 12gpm.

This is what i was going to run on my PSD van, but I sold it before I got the chance. Cheaper than Cat stuff for sure.

Our crew just went down 2 men. (Baby and a funeral) so I am working 14 night shifts in a row. Talk about feeling dazed and confused!!

Once this “shight” ends, I need to chase my own fuel system woes.

I was thinking of using a Golden-rod for the strainer/WS before my mechanical pump. Bad idea?

And then just keep using my stock filter setup after unless it is hairline cracked....and if so, I’ll be going down this same route.
