im sure this is on here somewhere but for life of me i cant find it, but when swapping a 460 out for an idi what does one have to do to get the tach to work? i assume the tach for the 460 can't be used with the idi? do i just need to swap in the whole gauge pod from a diesel truck?

im looking at possibly trying to swap my engine into a 1997 f350 that has a 460, is there anything special i'd need to know to put an idi into a 97?

What are you going to do about a speedometer? It was electronic in 97, along with the transmission. What transmission/transfer case are you going to use? If you use the older style with a speedo cable, then you will need to somehow use the old cable drive speedometer.

I would use a diesel cluster from a 92-94 idi and run the speedo off the vss. Using a ZF5 transmission will greatly simplify the swap. An e40d transmission complicates things greatly.

my plan is to use the zf5 and transfer case i already have, if i use the cluster from a 92-94 truck is that plug and play? or is there some wiring needed to get working?

You will be doing a bit of wiring. I would buy a wiring schematic for the 97 and for the parts truck so you can see what all needs to be changed.

I own two 92's... they use a speedo sensor mounted on the diff. It's a hall effect magnet that counts the teeth on the ring gear for signal..

One truck is AF 5,,, the other one is E4OD... No mechanical connection from trans to speedo.
