+1000! My 88 F-Superduty did the same thing. I had a shop replace the 5.13's with 4.11's and they didn't lube the outer axle bearings as drdmh44 described. 100% WMO?
Viscosity scales are different for different oils! As you can see from the chart, 85W gear oil has about the same pour point as 30W motor oil. I have no idea why they did the scales like this other than to keep us confused!- sign_man

Air clean lid modification?
The only thing worth removing is the restrictor in the base that choked down the size of the hole. FWIW on the other forum a member dyno tested a breather that did not have the restrictor plate, but did have the infamous soup bowl. 1st time towing - Lackluster performance.
IMHO, a naturally aspirated truck has something wrong if it's belching smoke, so in light of that and your other posts, I'll vote for getting your fuel and timing set right. REAR END QUESTION
Since the truck never moves when the parking brake is applied, how do the shoes wear out? The biggest worry with the parking brake is the teaspoon sized capacity.
