Hey guys, I'm trying to eliminate my fuel leaks and I have to admit I'm a complete newbie. I have a filter that looks like the one pictured only it's a Wix filter. I'm getting fuel running down the filter and I want to replace it but I have a wire at the bottom of the filter and don't know how to remove it. I'm bad about breaking things.

My question is, can someone explain how the wire comes of?

Is there another seal that the filter seals against that might need changed?

Any help much appreciated!

Sounds like you have the original style filter on the truck. The original style has a piece that spins off the bottom. The original filter looks like your picture above with the threaded portion and seal on the top and the bottom of the filter. The filter you bought is not the original style, you will not be able to hook the original wire back up.

The filter that is on the truck looks exactly like the filter I bought. They are the Wix equivalent of the filter pictured.

It must have a spot for the sensor underneath. Wait till someone else chimes in, I have just used the original style filters on mine.

Is one of these what your filter looks like? Which one is stock?

The factory just pushes on to to the connector....... mine normally falls off.......

It should just pull straight down, and just pop off like the little connector on the starter solenoid.

The wire on the bottom of the filter is the water in fuel wire. That filter has a water sensor in the bottom of it. Might want to check the top of the filter for the leak. Usually we find the black square looking thing develops a fuel leak. That top wire is the fuel filter heater. Please let us know if thats leaking.

Ok, thanks.

Can that fitting be taken off the old filter and put on the new filter so I can plug it back in?

The top wire has never been plugged in since I've had the truck. That was going to be my next question, pertaining to that wire.

Could you find a picture of the black thing you're talking about?

Leave the wire on the top unplugged....... it's for the useless heater in the filter head..... mine is unhooked, and is staying that way. Even the one on my 6.0 is disconnected.... Only thing that heater is good for is shorting out and blowing the fuse and if you have an E4OD put it in limp mode..... since the TECA and that heater are on the same fuse......

A previous member made it sound like the unplugged fuel heater could be the culprit... Or am I missing something?

No, the O-Ring in the fuel heater can cause a leak. It being unplugged will not cause it to leak.

I'm going to remove the heater, and tap for a 1/2 inch pipe plug and plug it for good....

Yes. That sensor has to be put on your new filter or there will be a huge fuel leak. In your top picture, I can see the spot that it goes into. On the bottom of the filter, there's two things. The water drain and a rubber "plug" that has red paint on it. You need to remove that plug by just pulling it out. Then you will see he threads that your sensor threads into. You need a 14mm deep socket or wrench. A new o-ring should have been included with your new filter. When you have the sensor out, you will see the o-ring on it. Just use the new one in place of the old one. Don't over tighten the sensor when installing it. you can break it if you tighten it too much.
