well, I think I spoke to soon. I started my truck and no tack, tried to jiggle a few things but with no luck. the current symptoms are, no tack operation, OD light is dim, I can only use 2nd and 3rd. I drove it home which is only a 10 minute ride and the tack never bounced.

I did some further testing and I am pretty sure the computer is bad. I found one on parts geek for $101 its remanufactured, not sure if that's good or not. its made by standard motor products. I could only find one for a 1989 and it doesn't specify the motor or tranny. it doesn't seem to be a common part anymore. my question is, does this one seem to be a good one to buy.

Reman is the only way to get a TCM. They haven't been available new for years.

Have you tried Ford? It will cost a bit more through a dealer, but it should come with the latest reflash (94 program).
94 shift schedule doesn't suck as bad as the earlier programs.

I did try ford and they said it is discontinued. I didn't ask for a 94 computer, my truck is a 91. should I try to find one for a 94 year truck?

If you ask for a 94 computer, you'll probably end up with a powerstroke pcm which has the tcm built in.
Specify early 94 if you can.

I cant help it I'm spoiled.LOL
Ford got their head out of their ass with the 00-01 4R100 shift program. It makes the best IDI TCM program suck really bad.:D

Same here..... the 5R110 is then again that much better. I wonder if a 5R could be fitted to an IDI...... that would be a great setup.......

the e4 and 4r can be used but the 5r is different bolt pattern.......too bad too, that trans is a dream.that ones so nice i bet it could turn a lot of the opinions of the manual trans guys in here after playing with the tow/haul mode for a day.:sly

holy crap iv got to put down the coffee pot and get to work.LOL
edit; oh yeah and last i checked they didn't make a decent stand alone controller for it yet either.a real ****** to code for....but anyway,iv got to go climb a tree or two.

No, I don't think so..... I think you can use a 4R100 transmission, but you have to use an E4OD solenoid pack and controller. Trackspeeder knows the tricks there...... The 4R100 controller is "part" of the engine PCM for the 7.3PSD. So it uses the engine control inputs to the PCM to control the transmission. For example, the instrument cluster in a PSD is 100% controlled by the PCM, the sensors/senders on the engine do not connect to the gauges, they "connect" to the PCM. Also, there is no physical connection to the engine for the throttle. There is a TPS that is part of the pedal inside the cabin.... so that is where both the PCM and transmission get their throttle position, vs the FIPL on the IP........

Agreed, I see no need for a manual when towing using Tow/Haul mode. I also use it when we go to the inlaws in the hills of SE Kentucky....... makes it easy to control speed on the mountains......

ok, I thought the computers wouldn't interchange. I think its funny how electronically based the early PSD or all the PSD is compared to the IDI.

could I use the 4R100 computer for an E4od?

No, The 4R works off the PCM, which requires a couple more sensors to operate. You can go with a stand alone controller.
A stand alone controller will allow you to do what ever you want with the tranny. Full manual shift up or down. Control of the converter lock function. You can just throw it in drive and cruise.
