Aftermarket wastegate any good?

Black dawg... The factory wastegate canister you thinking is a vacuum can is not a vacuum can. Inside that can is a diaphram and a spring. The spring holds the wastegate closed at all times till enough pressure is made in the intake side of the turbo. Then than pressure known as boost opens the wastegate by overcoming the spring pressure. We can increase the spring pressure so more boost is made which in turn makes more turbo boost. All idi turbo wstegate systems work off boost pressure on the spring. The pictured turbo with just the spring can never open the wastegate. All that thing does is holds the gate closed. Probably does a good job of that too.

LOL ya that AIN"T No aftermarket Waste Gate actuator...NOPE it's a Home brewed gateholderclosertigher...thingamajiggydohicky That's what that is....

Gary is right and the one other way is to run a pressure regulator inline with the boost line and adjust for more pressure! = MORE BOOST...

Yea I'm just guna take the 3" ats housing off the rebuilt charger and put it on the new one ... Ill tweak the boost once I play with the fuel first and have a pyro and boost gauge in.... What is highest boost I can run on a 7.3 IDI with stock head bolts .... Has 73,000 orginal miles so I don't wanna blow it up lol.... I've read 12 and also read 15.... Which is it?

In all honesty that looks like it could be the internals of the factory WG(the on on the bottom turbo). Gary said the factory WG's have a diaphragm and spring. the way the spring is set up in the first pic, it would hold the WG shut.

IMHO somebody took the WG head apart and didn't put it back together.

i wish i had one to take apart lol. has anybody taken our WG's apart?

I never said the factory FORD set up is vacuum operated. The 94+ GM 6.5 TURBODIESEL has a VACUUM operated wastegae.

On the home brewed setup in the pic, exhaust pressure will push on the wastegate valve. IF they got the spring right, it should still function. BUT, that spring looks too heavy to me.

No... Any exhaust pressure on the wastegate valve holds it closed. The boost pressure is used to overcome the canister spring pressure thats holding the valve closed ALONG with the exhaust pressure. Thats how the gate operates. Exhaust pressure does not make it open. Russ will be along and chime in on this. I don't think I'm useing the right words attempting to explain the gate operation. No hard feeling either about the vacuum idea. We were both talking about differant trucks with turbos.

Gary, the way the WG works on the ats 093 turbos is it opens the flapper "into" the exhaust elbow that the down pipe connects to. you are partly correct and partly wrong lol. yes, when the wg for the 093 is fully functioning like the one on the OP's new turbo, you would adjust the threaded rod so you get what ever boost psi you want(ex. you adjust it so the WG opens at 10psi). so the boost pressure coming from the comp housing goes into the WG head and pushes on the diaphragm which then pushes the rod(let's say out of the WG head for easy understanding) then that opens the flapper inside the exhaust outlet/eblow. once your below the 10psi as used in our example, the spring(like the one you see in the picture on the old turbo) will then pull the WG rod back into the WG head, forcing the WG flapper to close and thus not allowing any exhaust gas to "bypass" the hot wheel and forcing 100% of the gas to go over the wheel.

this is why if you take the orange tube off the WG head like you see in the pic and plug it, you still need to secure the WG rod/flapper shut so it will not open do to exhaust drive pressure. So based on all of that, if that WG rod has the correct tension spring on it and now diaphragm, it could fully function as an acceptable waste gate for that turbo. that spring on there does look pretty heavy duty but i will let you know that it is a PITA to pull on that rod to hook it back up to the flapper pin on the outlet housing.

Here are some pics to help show how the 093 WG is set up and hopefully help understand what i said in my last post.

in this one you can see the hole that the WG flapper covers, and then will "uncover" when your desired boost pressure is reached. For lack of better words the flapper sits on top of the hole. does not go inside the hole.

In this one you can see the flapper and the linkage in the outlet elbow with the down pipe attached to it. when the WG rod is pushed out of the WG head like i said in my last post it will push the linkage so the flapper will un cover the hole in the above pic, relieving drive pressure into the exhaust pipe.

It works the back pressure from the drive pressure will overcome the spring and will open the wastegate. That type of setup prevents boost creep and thus keeps the wastegate closed which keeps the pressure in the turbine housing to drive the turbo. That allows the turbo to spool faster cus of that. This is a better mod than welding the wastegate shut.

works now. thanks for the pic.

OP, i would put the bigger outlet on the new turbo and run the new turbo. the wg on the old turbo can work just fine with a bunch of trial and error, but it would be much easier to use the new WG.
