Looking good man. I agree with Calvin, the parts guy/gal at Ford is full of crap. The thermostat is not obsolete, but, the a lazy ******-bag who didn't want to take 5-10 seconds to look up the T-stat is obsolete.:backoff:mad:

Wonder why the headgasket failure? Find any clues?

Had my 15 psi boost gauge pegged full throttle EGTs about 975F. Doing 85+ and still accelerating up Parleys (the pass from Salt lake to Park City). I was honestly paying too much attention to my temperature gauge and didn't notice the boost was buried until I saw the steam.

Before the intercooler I would always back off based on temps, so i wasn't really watching the boost... lesson bought is a lesson taught!LOL

Concerns...

Went after getting the heads prepped tonight. There is some gouging and pitting where the sealing ring goes.

You must be registered for see images attach

Is this enough to warrant having it shaved?

YES find someone that either will do it then fit each precup or stake them and face themwith a CBN equipped surfacer.

seee the 4 punch markes, thats to make sure the precups dont jump up an efff up the surfacer.

That looks like the head gasket was moving around fretting the head. Tuff break but yes.. Do as suggested above and stake the precups in the head. The factory tollerance is above or below the head deck .0025. That means you have 5 thousands as to where the precups can sit in the head 2.5 thousands above or below the deck surface...
Russ. Why is the precup marks differant on only one cylinder in the head pic you posted...:dunno

How are the pre-cups removed properly?

1/4 dia, long brass or soft steel rod thru the injector hole, they tap right out. bends the rod but then you have a tool for the job. A real cheap HF screwdriver works too, soft steel.

even a 3/16 stick welding rod willwork.
Gary it must be from the other side of the engine LOLonly you would pick that up. I think it had an 88 cast in it and the others are 89. I picked the best of 4 sets. and yes they all measured the same cc.

Yes.. Thats the shakeing you feel.... Funny how such a small thing can do that and bug the heck out of you doing it. Like I have said here many times about my balanced ingine... You can hear it running.. You just can't feel it running...

thanks Gary.

now i know what that is. nothing to be worried about.

Good deal on the job.. Thats great news right there. Yes Russ.. I do notice things like that all the time. I really dought I would ever install a piston backwards....:angel:;p But I have done some crazy things working alone too. Thats why I take pics before I close up anything. The pics have saved me from taking the front cover and oil pan off too... 80,000 miles on bronze valve guides...;Sweet That duma$$ in vegas wouldn't sell me what he sold you. No matter what I asked for he kept telling me the heat of a diesel would melt them.. *** Homer... Its my money... Its my engine.. Sellme what fits and be done with it. Crappy things like that happen to me. Many years ago when number 7 cavitated the engine is sitting out of the truck. I told the shop to replace the passenger side head gasket.. Nope.. They said it wasn't needed.. Well gees guys... I'm telling you to do something and charge me for it.... Nope.. I'm still betting they felt I would be back in a few months with the passenger side head gasket failure... Nope.. It lasted well over 300,000 miles and never did leak a drop. Now thats a great gasket to hold up a turbo boosting to 13 lbs hauling the freight long hard miles.. I guess sometimes your the bug and sometimes your the windshield...:rotflmao

Same story here Gary. Talked to the machinist about the Manganese Bronze guides from Precision Engine Parts, same story. He won't put them in the heads. He doesn't have the ability to hone the bore after reeming is the real reason. Spoke to PEP myself and their tech guy "RT" told me they give twice the life of cast iron, but are a more difficult to install/machine properly, and heat transfer is a "concern". He couldn't or wouldn't say if that lead to issues with valve wear or not.:dunno

I'm stuck getting hardend cast iron guides. Not the end of the world. The factory guides gave the 'ol 6.9 325,000 miles.

Well... it may a be a while before I can get this done now. Wife was t-boned in her Jetta yesterday. She and the others involved are unhurt, thank heaven!!

Good news is that I have found a good machine shop, now we need to get the car fixed before I can consider finishing this motor. It needs to be done right, or not at all.
