My Cowl Intake

Here is what i did. instead of paying $100 for the hypermax unit i decided to make my own. it cost me less than $15. can't argue with that. i think i still have some fine tuning but i am happy with the way it turned out.

One question: is there a type of tape that you guys would recomend to take the place of the clear shrinkwrap in the pics?

4" ductwork coupler. it came with 2 hose clamps. lowes, $4.

Drilled 4" hole in firewall thanks to a brand new hole saw. cut like butter. lowes, $25.

I cut and bent some alluminum that i had to kind of form to the firewall.

Got a downspout adapter from lowes. has a sqaure end that i put on the firewall. it actually fit good and clamped good as well. lowes, $8.

I used the factory flexible elbow. not the best fit, but....

The truck definatly sounds more agressive under acceleration. seems like the more i drive it the more the turbo whistles. once i get above 2,000rpm you can really hear the turbo. throttle response was noticably increased. seems to get up to speed a little quicker and easier as well.
i don't know about any increase in boost since i don't have my boost gauge hooked up. no idea on EGT's, no gauge for that yet.

overall i am more than happy with what i came uup with and the results.

normally my dad does not want me doing much to my truck, but when i can sell him on even the possibility of mpg increase, or in this case the reported extended air filter life he is cool about it.

i would prefer to preserve that factory flexpipe b/c when i get my pyro i want to put it back to factory and compare egt's.

That gorilla tape is incredibly strong. It's what duct tape USED to be and then some

One thing I can see there on your installation is where it enters the firewall, the piece that you used extends a ways into the chamber on the other side. THis is going to block the air flow. You want that to be flush with the firewall so that the air can flow smoothly into the tube. You might want to reach in there with aq cutoff wheel and trim it down flush, then loosen the screws and seal the collar tight to the firewall with RTV , that way when you tighten it down, you will have a rain tight seal all the way around your adapter ring and a smooth air flow going into your tube.
I have a Hypermax Cowl induction so Iknow how they have it all worked out after all the time and money they spent figuring it out to work properly and it does work great. If you follow the same guidelines, there's no reason you shouldn't get similar results

you will like it! although i can argue with your $15. i did mine for free!! i already had the hole saw and i robbed a dust collector coupler from my dads woodshop! hehe. definately DEFINATELY made a difference. i told the guys at the rally that mod is the only reason my truck is able to pull my camper. it wouldnt get above 50 mph before doing that.

water report:

it rained all night last night and i drove threw some pretty good rain coming to school this morning and everything was bone dry in my air box and intake tube

Just keep your drain boots clear and you shouldn't have any issue. Nice job.

JUst in case you are not aware of teh location of your drain boots, you have one on each side in the inner fender where the bottom of the cowl drops down It should be accessable from an access panel in the footwell area to clean them out.
You should also have a drain in the bottom of your air filter box ( but I've never seen any water get that far on mine, and I;ve driven in a downpour so hard that most traffic was pulled over and what was still moving wasn't going more than 15 mph and pulling a heavy trailer. the kind of rainwhere the moisture content is so high even without sucking water the lack of actual air makes you start to feel a loss in power, but I pulled off and checked and it was bone dry inside but you for sure want those drains clear. If they get blocked, you could have a problem fast

Where the fender meets the door edge, feel the plastic fender well where it sweeps down toward the rear of the truck, shove your arm up there(quite a bit) you'll feel it. It's about 3 inches in length and comes out at a point. Kind of like the dust drain on a tractor's air filter. I usually just yank the rubber boot out completely. When you do whatever you intend on doing with the boot, flood your cowl out with a garden hose to flush all the crap out...there will be a ton of crap in it.

stick a garden hose over your cowl.you'll find it quick.
you'll see even with a garden hose on full,you could never dream of filling the cowl up even close to the ducting height.

You should also have a drain in the bottom of your air filter box ( but I've never seen any water get that far on mine,

nor have i.
i won't say its impossible.but i sure couldn't imagine how one could ever manage it either lol.
both drains would have to plugged solid,and it would have to rain for days and days.even thenid bet the water would drain out through cracks someplace before ever filling the cowl up.not too sure on that one though,so i peak down in the cowl holes once in a great while just for good measure lol.always empty of course though.
