Just picked up a 1994 f350 with 7.3 idi turbo. I bought it knowing it didnt run. Its a crank no start. I am not getting fuel out coming out of the injection pump to the lines. I verified that fuel is going into the pump by removing the feedline. The FSS solenoid does work, I removed the IP top cover and verified the lever was actually moving when the solenoid is activated. The bar in the IP that the FSS actuates moves, albeit kinda slowly and i wondered if it didn't have enough spring pressure to move even with the solenoid removed/activated. So I tried cranking it with the cover removed and physically moving that bar myself. Still no fuel coming out of the injection pump to the injectors. I plan to verify the IP gear timing. Previous owner had someone replace the IP and i dont know if they removed the whole housing or not when doing so. Could a mistimed IP cause fuel to not get to the injectors? I know it could obviously keep it from starting and or run really bad, but I would think fuel would still get to the injectors with the lines cracked. What else should I check?

How about they installed a dead pump?
Start working backwards and see where you get fuel.

An IP will still pump fuel no matter the timing. It's all mechanical and doesn't know any different. Are you getting fuel out of the IP? To verify, you can remove one of the injector lines from the back of the IP. Crank the engine over and see if fuel is coming out.

That's what I thought but wasn't certain.

No, I am not getting fuel out of the IP. I did verify it that way. The metering valve rod/bar moves freely. Im soaking the IP bowl with some power service diesel kleene. Maybe that might free something up? If no luck with that I think ill either try messing with the metering valve more or putting the old IP back in.

Curious
We don't know anything about the previous owner, so anything is possible.
Maybe feed the lift pump from a bottle of secret sauce and atf and let it soak then fire it, then repeat.
But sounds like a good plan replacing the pump if you have a good one.
Check the inlet port on the ip, longshot they left the plug in.... :dunno

My IP was dead once, or so I thought. Pull the return line off, and stick a line on the return and stick it in a bucket. See if it will run. If the return is blocked somewhere, it will not let fuel go to the injectors.

Thank you for the suggestion, I tried it. However it did not work.

Previous owner claimed it was running good until he had a shop put a new transmission in it. It doesnt crank with the key, only from the fender solenoid. So I figured the shop messed up something somewhere in the starting circuit and couldn't figure it out. The PO had a few people work on it trying to fix it. I dont know how they came to replacing the IP for a no crank condition. They replaced the mechanical lift pump with a facet duralift. I verified that works.

I pulled the fuel filter and filled it with power service diesel kleene and cranked it trying to soak it. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to have done anything.

I pulled the IP. I am going to check the transfer pump and screen for damage or clogging(the fuel coming from the tank is awful and i wonder if it sat for so long before the IP replacement that clogged it up when they replaced it). If I don't see anything obvious on the transfer pump or screen Ill probably put the old IP back in and go from there.

Good ideas.
Maybe dose the tanks with some biocide (?sp?) it's a treatment for alge, look up asphaltines in the tank, sounds like the shop cut a wire.
Automatic trans? Check the harness.

When you cranked on it with the top off of the pump, did the fuel level in the housing rise?

Also, make sure the pump driveshaft isnt sheared.

I didn't notice prior to pulling the pump, however now that its out the shafts is not sheared.
I disassembled the transfer pump and unfortunately did not see anything obviously wrong. There was some crap and what looks like rust built up inside. Though the screen was clear and the transfer pump vanes moved freely. So I still do not know what is wrong with this pump. I am going to put the old IP in and see if that works. Fingers crossed

So you have verified you have 12v while cranking and in run at the IP? Or are you using a jumper wire to the battery there also?
