What marine outfit are you with in Seattle? Another marine diesel tech up here in roche harbor. I used to work on a ton of work boats down in the Seattle area.

Hahaha. Yup. I’m in the same boat. Been welding steel for over 35years. Made a really good living and have never been with out work. Ive tried aluminum many times with a spool gun. Strong but ugly. Purchased a used tig set up and went after it. Still not great after 5years but it’s good enough for my personal jobs.I’ve taught myself every welding process I’ve ever done, luckily I’ve made a hell of a living off welding steel. But 3 days into aluminum leaves a lot to be desired.
Turned out from my own ignorance or maybe it was always like that (the crew cab did run like crap) the wiring for the FSS was wired into the cold start advance AND the high idle. So it was always advancedThat is 100% fuel knock. You probably have a stuck injector pintle.
What I am thinking is a it was way to advance to begin with, to much fuel pressure advanced it some more, plus whatever the timing advance was for the cold start. That plus the old pump trying to keep up with new injectors. It has some stiction eleminator in it. But I’ll add some more stuffDefinitely a lot better. Still odd, shouldn't have been knocking with the fast idle and timing advance on. I'd put a bunch of fuel cleaner in it to lube it up and keep an eye on it. I had an injector seize up internally after 2000 miles.
