y and up pipe

I have searched through the many threads and can't quite find the answer to my question. I understand the issue with the slip joint where the y-pipe slides into the up pipe. My issue is that the male side does not slide very far up into the female side, the bulb on the y doesn't get up into the up pipe more than 1/2" or so when it is fitted correctly to the exhaust manifold. I had the turbo replaced and a 4" exhaust installed by a shop a few years ago when I was too busy to work on it myself. It has been fine until I recently developed a bad exhaust leak and have lost boost. When they installed everything, they put a standard exhaust donut on there and crammed it all together. It worked up until now, when the exhaust donut fell apart. What is causing the misfit here? It seems like the up pipe needs to move down a half inch or more for the connection to fit right. Is this something that can happen? Do I need to remove the turbo and adjust the up pipe? I have an oil leak out of the bottom of the turbo that provides for an oily mess under the turbo and IP so I was thinking of digging into that anyway.

I have been waiting for Classic Diesel Design to run another batch of their after market up pipe that solves this whole problem but no joy yet. Does anyone know of any other solutions?

I’d fix the turbo and pull the piping out and weld it how ever long it needs to be. If you can’t weld just take it to an exhaust shop they can fix it right and usually less then ordering parts.

If you want to spend the money IDIot on here makes a modified up pipe from your wye and uses a v band clamp in place of the slip joint - I have one, works well.

Before you spend money on the other suggestions, check to see if the studs are still in the passenger's side exhaust manifold where the Y pipe attaches. If they are, the "nuts" on them are what keeps the Y pipe from fitting up inside the up pipe as far as it should. Remove the Y pipe, remove the studs, put bolts in their places, and that will solve your fitment issues. It sounds to me like that's your problem since the Y pipe never slid far into the up pipe.

No, the Y is held to the passenger manifold with bolts. The reason why the Y won't go farther into the up pipe is because of where the manifold holds it when I tighten the bolts and seat that seal. It seems like the Y needs to raise up, which it can't because of the manifold, or the up pipe needs to lower down, which it can't because it's bolted to the turbo. It used to fit up in there - what happened?! I don't see any solution but to spend the money on an alernative solution. SO depressing!

You mean like add an extension to the Y so it goes up there farther?

The Y pipe used to fit, but now it doesn't? This happened after a shop worked on it. To me, it seems like something changed. Maybe the turbo is very similar, but just different enough for it to not quite work. The shop shoved an exhaust doughnut in to make it not leak. That's the first clue that something isn't right. Maybe the cab mounts are bad enough that they have settled and won't let the turbo sit in the correct spot? I think that you should be looking VERY closely at everything to see if you can see anything that doesn't looks quite right.

I agree! I'm going to pull the turbo and up pipe and y pipe and look at it all more closely. It absolutely makes no sense that the y pipe only goes into the up pipe 1/2"! They are all bolted to the engine! Whatever that shop did has lasted for 2-3 years, too late to go back to them (and I don't want to now!). The cab seems to be sitting fine but i will check that out

I was wondering about having a 1" spacer made for between the turbo and up pipe - does that sound crazy? Maybe it's an inappropriate fix. Hopefully I will learn something when I tear it apart AGAIN.
