If it was originally a single rear (typical pick-up), the "dually conversion" must be simply a set of wheel spacers allowing the duals to not hit your frame. Converting back to single should be as simple as removing the spacers and installing normal wheels on the rear.
My experience regarding traction with duals is they're terrible in slick conditions and will never match singles (unless there's a lot of weight involved). Towing & hauling, duals will always get the nod. Singles are also a little cheaper at the toll both!
A "pickup" can be converted to a official dually "pickup" by simply swapping in a dually rear end from a dually "pickup". The dually pickup rearend is 4 inches wider, giving room for the dual wheels to the pickup frame.

A "cab and chassis" dually rearend is different and won't fit. A cab and chassis rear frame is different from a pickup, and a pickup bed will not fit onto a chassis cab rear frame.

Answers some questions I had. I have an 87 350 cab-chassis ambulance and have been contemplating going to off-road singles. So... If I was to bolt on some singles, removing the front adapters how would the rear track width compare to the front?

There are no front adapters on these older trucks. if 2wd you need the SRW rotors. If 4wd, you need SRW bearing hubs. The C&C rear axle isnt mich different width from SRW pickup... which is a couple inches narrower than the front.

From what I have been told, it will be 2 inches narrower on each side in the rear compared to a pickup.

Thanks gentlemen. I should have specified, the truck is 4X4 with DRW. Just looked up the cost of doing that, looks like it will be DRW for a while. Have not had the front wheels off yet so assumed it had adapters.
