Ok, here's the thing.

It doesn't go into overdrive until it hits exactly 40mph.

I'd like it to shift into overdrive at about 35mph.

Is there any way to do that?

I'm just thinking that with so many urban speed limits at 35mph, And spending so much time cruising along at that speed... It might make for better fuel mileage, if it would shift into OD at that speed...

I have to say it really sounds like it is laboring, when at 35MPH. Almost alarming how labored it seems.

I usually do maybe 3 to 4 over.

It doesn't go into OD at exactly 40. (Even if I DID say that, before, LOL)

It goes into OD at about 42 or 43, usually.

Still it's along time with it sounding and feeling like it is winding out.

I think in most older Fords, they don’t go into OD until 40-45 by design. That way your aren’t lugging the transmission. Also to help prevent hunting..... bouncing back an forth creates heat.... They also don’t lock the converter until you are in that range either...... personally I’d rather have it run a bit higher RPM and use a few cents more in fuel, than burn up a $2500 transmission trying to save a buck......

Now fast forward a few years, and the Ford transmissions want to get to the highest gear feesible as quickly as possible. My 2 6 speed autos, on light throttle shift up as quickly as possible. However, they will lock the converter in all 6 gears, and skip gears up and down if they need to.... on the other end, with your foot on the floor, they will shift at 7000 RPM.... (3.5 EB / 3.7 V-6).... I’ve never gotten past 2nd gear on the floor because you are normally 70+ at that point.....

Yep. I've noticed that, too.

Racing to get up to traffic speed on a highway on-ramp... It will stay in 2nd until you are up there and let your foot off the pedal. Usually 65 to 70mph at that time...

And SLAM! into 4th!!!

I've got to practice a bit more with that, and figure out how to let it upshift earlier, somewhere in between, to 3rd at least, without slowing progress.

Also, to be honest, it's not so much the mpg that I am concerned with. It's the feeling and sound that it is winding out way too much.

In other words, it IS wear and tear on the trans that I am concerned with.

I may be wrong in this, but here goes, the trans is designed to shift where it does to protect itself, ie, the clutches from being overloaded. 1 of the big problems with chev 700r4-4l60es are they shift into higher gears and dont downshift fast enough. burn up clutches in every 1 i have ever rebuilt. I think ford designed them this way for a reason. it is annoying, however I rebuilt an e4od that tps was adjusted to delay shift points, had direct clutch pack destroyed. take this for what it costs you.

What voltage is your FLPS set to? My truck dumps in to 4th / TC locked right at 35mph. Last I checked it, my FLPS was set as close to 1.2 as I could get without actually hitting 1.2.
I was thinking that might be a part of the problem.

I believe mine is set at 1v, or maybe .9v.

I'll try raising it to 1.2 and see what happens.

Ok, I could see that as a problem.

But what I am saying is that the shift points are too delayed.

I want it to shift sooner.

The most you can do to adjust the shift points is to play with the TPS.
If you really want to fine tune your E4, you will need to ditch the factory TCM.

higher voltage will make it take longer to shift.
Hmm. I don't think you can adjust it much lower than mine, and still have it work.

I dunno. That's why I am asking.

Some of the 94-97 PSD tuner/chip products claimed to manipulate the E4OD shift points... but I don't know if that can be done with older ones. I did see this offering (I have no experience with it) https://official.bankspower.com/tech_article/why-add-a-transcommand/

I was set on making my E350 5spd if I kept it.

Really small tires should be able to trick the trans into shifting at lower speeds. :D

LOL smaller tires, or just going ten to fifteen over, may have to be the answer. :D

Or just live with it.
