Front tank sending unit.

My front tank is out of the truck. (Going to be fun trying to put it back in there since I wasn't the one to take it out, so have no idea how to put it back, correctly. )

It's a plastic tank. And it is my understanding that the sending unit is different for the plastic, than it is for the metal tank.

But I can find nothing that gives me any kind of part number or anything.


I am going to need the complete unit, of course. And probably the o-ring, and lock ring.

A plastic tank? That's not stock, is it? Is there a manufacturer name on it? If there is you might ask them about the proper sending unit.

My '92 has a plastic tank too.

Yes, it is stock. Toward the end of the IDI run, they used both. Now I think all the truck tanks are plastic. The 44 gallon in my 03 Excursion is plastic, and the 26 gallon in my 11 F-150 is plastic..... Dad’s 16 F-150 is plastic also.....

It’s all good... I think in the 90’s it depended on the phase of the moon what these trucks got. I’ve seen 2 metal, 2 plastic, one of each. I think the C&C trucks when to plastic first, then they were slowly phased out. I had a front tank from a 94 IDIT and it was plastic and I think (it’s been a bit since I got it) was metal. My 92 had 2 metal tanks.....

Yes, the pics would be helpful.

This is not a project I am doing right now. Could be a while. I just like to start getting prepared with parts and such, a while ahead of time.

In the end, if I decide to use the tank normally, I might end up just getting the normal sending unit, then running that front tank, and leaving the back full, long enough for me to figure out what the fuel level actually is, regardless of what the gauge says.

But it is also possible that I will simply get some sheet metal, make a disk, solder a pipe into it, for a pickup, and then use an electric pump to pump from that tank, to the back tank, whenever the back tank nears empty.

Also depends... A friend may come up with a metal tank, sender and all, to just outright replace this. We'll see.

The pics aren't as extensive as I remembered, but that's not unusual. I have 2 which show general placement more than anything else. I'm going to assume that you have the proper straps to hold the tank. Keep in mind also that this is a CC Dually, so placement in relationship to the cab may be different.

Does that plastic tank even use the same type of lock ring as the metal ones do? Do they have a screw down type or am I thinking of something else? Since I've never messed with a plastic tank on a truck this old, I don't know.

They have a big threaded “lid” that screws down onto the top of the tank. The center of the “lid” is open to allow all the plumbing to pass through.

Mine is exactly identical to yours.

Everything is exactly the same. Including the stamps!

I like how the retaining ring screws down in these like a jar lid.

Could you do me a favor now?

Could you pull that sending unit, and take some measurements and pictures?


If it's anything like mine was, you will find the pipes completely rotted. But you should be able to at least hold a measuring tape up near things, and take pics of them. Like this one, I just took of the neck of mine...

I'd kind of like a measurement of the circle plate at the top, and a few pics at different angles of the sending unit.

(The shop that took my tank off, sent the rotted sending unit off to have a new one made. And I eventually cancelled the order because it was just taking too long, and was going to cost almost three times as much as just a brand new tank, and sending unit. I wasn't the one who ordered it, and I wasn't the one who was going to pay for it, but I have a great dislike for wasting other people's money.)

If your pickup and return lines are good an you only need to repair the sending unit you can buy this one much cheaper and just use the resistor and wiper assembly off it to install in yours. I've used them for front and rear even though the rear resistor is slightly different in length, you can adjust the arm to make it read from E to F without issue. If your float is bad, you can get a new brass one at most auto parts stores.
