Well, got off work a few hours ago and tried again. Chucked up a 3/8 drill bit and it fell in the holes in the oil drain, someone beat me to that. Loosened the oil drain/pedestal from the intake. Heated the up pipe with a propane torch. Loosened the wye got it barely seated then tightened it a little so it wouldn’t move, still not going together............. :( Might try the turbo first then wye method but I’m having really bad feelings about the manifold studs. If I mess up the threads and not get them out I’ll probably have to pull the manifold. I was really expecting to be driving the truck to work yesterday and I feel miles from completion, shoot me now lol.

The pedestal holes are 3/8 from factory. The exhaust manifold studs have to come out if they have a hex, it wont let the elbow seat, and the slip, as much as I hate to take them apart, may need some soaking with penetrant to allow things to align.

There is no obvious hex, they appear threaded all the way down. Even have different sized nuts, someone has definitely been in there replacing things. I can run the nuts down on the wye until it won’t budge

Nice tip on the bolt holes, didn’t think about that. I haven’t messaged him, I doubt it’s something he did wrong. Figured he’d chime in here.

No wasn’t saying he did anything wrong, just that he would be the one to have a solid tip for the install. You could try installing the y after the turbo, but personally I have better luck using the weight of the turbo to pull itself onto the slip joint, maybe some light lubricant to help it slip into place? I’ve got several oem pedestal castings and they all measure well below 3/8” from the factory, so good yours is already modified it makes is significantly easier to install.

If it doesn’t want to press on with some lubricant, put some grease on the y and see where it’s stopping in the up pipe section, maybe there’s something inside the up pipe casting that’s preventing it from going on?

Wes, were you taking about drilling the pedestal to manifold holes?

Yes, sorry if that wasn’t clear. The pedestal bolts holes where it connects to the intake manifold.

You should be fine with these then. I forgot that it's a 1983. Some of the early manifolds didn't use the hex studs. They work ok for a turbo, but I HATE trying to remove them!

Man, I wish I would have thought of this one years ago. It sure would have made some of the installs much easier.

can’t tell you how many I’ve installed before I even figured that trick out myself.

They are strange. Some seem to be next to impossible to get lined up, others seem to almost line themselves up for you.cookoo

Well I appreciate all the tips, I guess I just got lucky on one that doesn’t want to line up. I’ll drill out those holes, maybe call in some reinforcements and keep trying. If any of you gurus are passing through Indiana, I’ll buy beer and pizza lol

See! That's how it goes. Now you are qualified to help anyone who's going through the same:cool
I didn’t notice that was the issue until I tried Wes’s way with the oil drain bolted on before install. Couldn’t get everything lined up so I pulled the wye off and I still couldn’t get the the drain in the grommet. Then I knew something was wrong lol.
