Fuel gauge is either shorted to ground or disconnected completely, I don't remember which is which. Start by tracing the wires.
Only if it stays there. mine goes way past the full mark and stays takes 70-80 miles to drop below the full mark (empty). Then it works somewhat normally. It drops faster than it should, but it goes all the way down close to empty. It may go all the way, but I haven't tried it.

I would personally try to find a good used pump and pulley at the junkyard... But I'm cheap lol!

Will do with the fuel gauge wire. The junk yards around here don't have anything this old anymore, they scrapped them all when scrap prices were so high about a decade ago.

Yeah a few around here did too, sucks for us.

Might be worth asking Thewespaul if he has anything but I know he's pretty busy right now.

Diego is the same.

Clearly my pump pulley sits way too far forward for some reason. I'm on the hunt for a new pump and pulley because of this issue and the wobble. The pump is no problem, the pulley on the other hand is proving to be made from unobtanium.

@Shamoke did you ever find the correct pulley?

My oil change man found a pulley from someone he knows and it is sitting on his desk waiting forme to get the truck back to him. After he replaced the pump we found out the new pulley they sold him with that pump would not go onto the shaft so he reused the old one, same problem but a bit closer to working correctly.
Right now I have the truck at another mechanics having the fuel return lines replaced, the steering adjusted, wiper switch replaced and the radiator repaired. Soon as that's all done it will get the new pulley.

So an update to this thread. I have gotten the ps pump pulley replaced and all is well there, no more belt interference. Have replaced the hoses and radiator, lift pump, fuel return lines, caps and injector o rings. Truck is finally where it needs to be to run well and I think it will last quite a while. I finally ran the front fuel tank empty today and found that the fuel gauge starts to hope between over full to a quarter tank when the tank is nearing empty, I guess I need to pull both tanks and clean them out and replace the pickups and sending units but that will wait until next spring.

It was 12 degrees this AM and I needed to move the truck to get my work van out and I never plugged it in last night. It cranked fine and false started a few times but did start with a bit of accelerator peddle applied and smoked a bit until it started running smooth, I was impressed that it started that easily on a cold morning with no help from block heaters or ether. I may have a small problem with fuel running back to the tank though as the truck sits on an incline to the rear but nothing I can't handle. I was also impressed that the fuel did not gel up because I have not used any additives at all in this truck. I need an anti-gel and a lubrication additive but haven't settled on one yet although I have been looking at ordering Hot Shot's Secret anti-get additive. What do you guys use?

I read on another thread about the parking brake issue and I have the same problem, peddle goes to the floor but does not hold without using 1st gear and a brick under a tire. Did the 1988 trucks have the plastic wedge in the parking brake peddle to stop the slip of the adjuster?

No they do not. Typically the very first thing to check in this case is adjusting the rear shoes. They don't hold adjustment very well and will cause the exact problem you're describing.

That one should work very well from what I've seen. I don't use anti-gel unless it's supposed to get single digits or lower, at least around here there are anti-gel additives in the fuel from the station to some extent. 4-5 different trucks over the last 6-8 years and don't think I've ever had a gelling problem yet. Don't take my word for it though, if you feel the need to run it do so, an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure and all.

Glad you've got it running right!

Remember that the IDI has a fast idle solenoid for cold starting. Prior to cranking, with ignition in "ON" position, depress accelerator pedal to set fast idle solenoid, then crank. If you continue to have trouble with fuel returning to the tank from the filter head, you've likely got trouble with a line connection, allowing air to enter the system which results in unnecessarily long cranking cycles, stalls and rough idle at start up.
