I'm currently debating on the merits of these 392/393 skoker kits for the 351W. Does anyone have any anecdotal evidence or thoughts about them? I'm looking at building the an engine for respectable torque numbers ( maybe around 450 ft-lbs)

Watch the compression ratio. Even though the crank is designed for stock 302 piston height, the compression ratio gets out of hand for the run of the mill 302 pistons. Keith black does make some deep dish to attain street able compression ratios.

The kits I've been looking at have included pistons, con rods, bearings, rings, and I guess it's supposed to be 'ready to run'

what cc heads will you be using? what is the piston dish? iron heads? it rather easy to come up with 11 to 1 plus compression ratios. Also good quench, chamber and dish combo can make better detonation resistant then low compression far in the hole pistons.

As I'm lacking in the money department, the heads I've been looking at are 64 cc ProComp #P3037 aluminum

A couple more questions.
What is this going in?
is it a daily driver, weekend warrior?
I am going to guess 4x4 pickup so
cam 212/218 at .050 256 comp extreme energy, any more and torque drops, less cam will need lower compression.
hydraulic roller would even be better for torque numbers.
22 dish piston 0 deck the block nets 9.4-9.5. .005 in the hole to .005 out is good. with iron heads
14 dish 0 deck with aluminum 10.5, I have never built an aluminum head sbf, so just and educated guess.
Zero decked block works well in sbf, ford even started putting pistons .004 out on the latter 5.0.
If you opt to not 0 deck you will have less compression, less torque, less detonation resistance.
Good dual plane such as an edelbrock performer rpm or weiand stealth.

I'm working on a one ton extended van and as there's a lot of mass already there, then combine that with the high probability that this thing will use it's class V hitch to tow something potentially decent sized( 7,500lbs range camper)

I've toyed with the idea of an Edelbrock Performer RPM package for the top end, but that's around $3,000, $3,000 which I sadly don't really have

Just the intake not the heads, but any aftermarket head is just about pointless without good intake. The pro forms look to have enough for what you want. Personally I would try to use iron heads, as aluminum sealing can be a little more finicky sealing and weight saving is a joke in this area application. World products iron seniors are same price point as the pro forms, you will want the seniors, due the chamber size. I would mention a set of pre emission stock but for the price of new heads vs machinist bill. Take a look at the self tuning fitech injection, been toying with the idea on a vehicle or two.
A step smaller cam would have better off idle manners, but at highway speeds on hills may lag, but with fitech injection off idle characteristic should be great either cam. I've built with ford EEC and have not yet delved into the world of aftermarket injection systems.

I've always been a carb guy, but those newer self-tuning, self-contained EFI systems look kinda interesting, I was looking at maybe something like that Holley Sniper one, or one like that one you mentioned

The 62 in my signature is a 302 with ford fuel injection, mustang computer, truck intake. Closed chamber 289 heads with larger valves stuffed in it. CR is 10.5 just about impossible to make ping.

Honestly, I'm not adverse to iron heads and a self contained EFI, but I've always kinda had this sour taste in my mouth from EFI and I'll say that factory computer control everything is to blame for that

Though I've been thoroughly enjoying our conversation, the conversation kinda hasn't answered my question about the Stroker kits. The one I've been kinda looking at is the Speedmaster PCE290-1147 which Summit sells. I kinda wonder what an engine could make with a kit like that and the parts we've been talking about

Attached a graph probably a bit optimistic with cr adjusted to the referenced kit. Drop 25-30 for liveable compression. That kit has 4cc dish pistons so 11.4 cr, it would take some high octane fuel to survive with a short cam on the street in a heavy van. The whole idea of the 393 stroker was it was to use stock windsor rods with 302 pistons. Problem is 302 pistons never had a large dish.

This is with 9.5 compression gtp40 or stock 351 heads with 1.84/1.54 valve. Better heads just free up power higher up in the rpm, no sacrifice on the low end, and looking at stan wies the stock heads hold up pretty well to the proform.
